I'm with you there, with the exception that I'm not lucky enough to have played STO beta yet. I'm sick to tears of WoW but nothing else is holding my interest, as most of it is so *like* WoW it might as well *be* WoW. I just resubbed to EVE hoping it will fill the time until the STO open beta.

i cant get into eve do to the fact there is no cap
so no matter how much time i put into the game i will forever be outclassed

I have this exact same feeling right now, I have been dumping money into games left and right trying to find something and i just can't.I am So sick of WoW but I keep finding myself rediscovering old barely used toons stashed away on various servers to keep my interest for a week (this week Rogue lol) Aion was a bust, I want to love Fallen Earth but I just cant for some reason, i think the combat in that game feels weird to me, I love the huge sandbox but something just isn't working for me. I have stopped myself from buying Champions Online on more than one occasion. I want to get a taste of SWTOR but that seems a long way off...soooo... ya dunno what do doooo!

have you even played fallen earth for one hour? it's quest grind non-stop. i didn't even bother to read the quest-texts any more after a few hours, because they were so dull and boring, it gave me a headache. WTH IS NEW in this game? NOTHING! it friggin' sucks. it's eq or wow or aoc all over again in not-so-shiny-new-horsey-boots.

fuuuuu, i hate all fanboys alike and people that just recite after them are even worse.

Good to see you with such a cheery attitude all the time, nt!

Do note, however, that when someone suggests a game, or says that this game (Fallen Earth in this situation) is "good" or they enjoy it, doesn't necessarily making them a "fanboy" by your definition. It makes them someone who enjoyed their time playing a game. The best way to respond to their suggestions if you don't like it is to do so constructively, versus "THIS GAME SUCKS, I HATE YOU ALL". It doesn't help a lot.

On a related note, I agree with the Author. I miss having something feel fresh and new in the MMO Genre. This has pushed me back to good ol' Steam and downloading non-MMO games like TF2 and Borderlands to pass the time. Fortunately, with Mass Effect 2 coming soon, followed very very closely by Star Trek Online, and then Global Agenda. I think the year will start off right.

Amen. I hear you there. MMO blues. Unfortunately Star Trek is a fun new setting, but it really isn't the spark I was hoping for. I think the direction that JumpGate Evolution was taking sounds more exciting.

I think partly, I would like to play more MMOs where my personal skill is more of a factor than what gear my virtual avatar has on it. In addition, I would prefer gameplay that team-based play is required again.

I was soooo done with WoW, but the new looking for group feature has drawn me back in. I can find a PuG within minutes and adventure with people in a team setting. That is what I like about MMOs. Conversely, so far in Cryptic's games - it feels like soloing is what you do and occasionally happen to do the same thing someone else is for a short while.

The best game of the year for me has been Left for Dead 2. I'm slugging through expert mode maps with 3 other people and our teamwork is awesome. There is more sense of adventure and a shared experience in LFD2 1hour maps than there seems to be in months of typical MMO play.

To bring it full circle, I would have loved it if STO was super team-based where players worked together to fly a single ship. The engineer actually truly managing engines & energy, tactical officers firing the weapons, the doctor tending crewmen inside the ship, all while the captain pilots the ship. Of course there would be room for the smaller single-man ships (like the one from DS9) but if you are going to fly some huge starship, then you need a live crew to do it right (but like LFD2, NPCs can fill in missing spots for you)

The STO you describe could only be done with a group of close, real world friends. Just thinking about the kind of shenanigans that occur in an online space with this concept makes my very bones shudder like a warp core nearing setting 10.

Still, maybe we'll get something along these lines in a co-op singleplayer game on a console. :)

@Kyle - in the world of MMOs, people actually having teamwork does sound scary to most people. Yet in my other example, Left for Dead, most of the games I play are with completely random people and are a blast.

That said, there are tweaks and games I bail on quick because of the bad company. An MMO where teamwork is required to fly a starship would be more of a balance between the random PuG feeling and the friends working together.

But if I can work together with strangers and complete an expert map in L4D2 (if you have done expert, you know how much teamwork and skill it takes to finish) then I think people can do it in an MMO.

The MMO culture has gone super soft and solo. It seems players feel as though they can't it it alone, then it is a bad game. But really, what it seems Blizzard is getting is that players actually like team-based play - but they want it really easy to get into it. Most MMOs offer the WORST grouping tools that don't amount to much more than a channel where you spam for a spot. Why would a developer not build a more sophisticated looking-for-group tool with good logic for matching? Newbies are matched with newbies and experts with experts aided by a ton of user options to set to narrow down your match further.

Ye, I feel the same. I tested probably most (bigger) MMOs, chugging money out like mad, just to be dissapointed after a while since it is "always the same". i envy the people who stick to one or two games for years and years and are still happy and don't long for something else.
The feeling of awe when one played the first or second MMO is just gone, never to return. That's why I think STO won't do it for me, no matter how good the game will be or not.
Maybe it is time to get my kid into whichever MMO and I will stick to what he discovers and enjoys.

I've wanted to like a majority of the MMOs I've played, but could not "for the life of [me] muster the interest to actually stick with [them] for very long." I'm constantly moving from one game to another, trying very hard to like each one but usually failing and moving on. I don't usually have much to complain about with the MMOs I briefly play, even WoW, which many people seem to have issues with. However, the thing that most quickly kills my desire to play an MMO are the character classes, professions, jobs, whatever-it-is-you-want-to-call-them.

I'm not going to blame developers, or the genre itself, for not designing classes that I'd like to play: clearly the ones that exist are sufficient to appeal to the vast majority of MMO players, and who am I to question what makes any given person "click" with any given class? I suppose my problem is that my first real "Massively Online" game was Guild Wars, and the very first class I played was a Mesmer (http://guildwars.wikia.com/wiki/Mesmer). There hasn't been another class in any other game that I connect with so readily and enjoy playing so much, and I can't even put my finger on exactly why that is. I think, vaguely, that it may have something to do with how the role of my favorite attribute (Domination Magic) does not fall cleanly into the Holy Trinity of "Tank - DPS - Healing," and moreso how much I liked playing that role in PvE and on the occasions that I would PvP. I'm mostly saddened that I've yet to encounter another class like this since leaving Guild Wars.

That's the breath of fresh air I'd most like to breathe: more diversity in class roles. I'd absolutely play any of the new MMOs if they featured classes like Mesmers. Though perhaps a bit of pessimism on my part, I don't think any MMO released in the next five to ten years (GW2 aside, and I don't even know if they're keeping Mesmers) will have that sort of "niche" class.

Allods Online has the Psionicist class that is sort of, kind of, a little like the Guild Wars Mesmer. I think part of the problem you're having is that Guild Wars classes are pretty different from the class design of most MMOs. Even classes as basic as the Warrior have more depth in GW than your typical MMO.

Well, yes, that's very likely it. I've always wondered what impact a first MMO can have on your perceptions of all the rest, and it seems I can't really start any more up because I got spoiled on ArenaNet's class design. Sneaky, sneaky devs!

For me, though, it begs the question(s): What makes Guild Wars' class design so different from that of the majority of other games? If there is something unique and special about it, why then is it the exception and not the rule? Without knowing how satisfied or dissatisfied other gamers are with the current method of class design, it's not a concern I usually feel that is shared.

Regarding Allods Online, it has caught my interest and the Psionicist was the first class I noticed. I'll see how that works out for me.

I'm starting to feel like this is a genre where there's no there there. In the past where I saw a lot of poorly designed games I still saw promise. Now I just see a stillborn genre. And I like this site, but it's a fansite without anything to put forth that rises to the level of deserving fans.

I love new experiences. I have a passion for that special instant when the game is captivating but you haven't quite got mastery of all the patterns yet and want to learn more, so you sit down and start obsessing about the whole MMO, read up tons about it, plan builds and can't wait to get into the game and keep playing. I love to compare what one MMO does differently from another and try out different game mechanics, from combat to crafting.

I seem to veer from innovative to traditional designs and back again to keep things fresh. And I have a special place in my heart for the games who take risks and do something different and succeed in their own ways: City of Heroes, Guild Wars, Kingdom of Loathing, A Tale in the Desert, and just recently Puzzle Pirates. (That's not to say I haven't enjoyed my time in more traditional settings who just tweak the formula slightly, LOTRO, WoW, WAR, DDO, AoC, etc.)

But I have to say that this isn't for everybody. Quite a lot more people I've met crave something more stable and less innovatively different that forces them to relearn every aspect of the game.

Still, if you don't try different games, you'll never know what you like and gives that minty fresh feeling and what leaves you cold.

I havent consistently played any MMO since I started playing WoW 4 years ago and have been looking for that rush ever since. That isnt to say Im a fanboy as I only play a few hours a week casually, theres just no getting around the fact that it is a good game and well made (I never said it was original!). However even now it is getting a bit tiresome and I long for something new. I tried AoC, Aion, Fallen Earth, CO but they are all variations of the same theme and I couldnt get past the first free month.

I am looking forward to more of a skill based MMO, like APB and Global Agenda although I have a feeling these might be short term solutions as I do like the idea of a persistent ongoing world which these games barely provide. Hopefully STO, TSW or TOR will give me that fresh feeling which I will stick with...!
