Interesting... I was just thinking of this and it would definitely be whips. Whips with elemental effects like seen in the next Iron Man 2 movie. I think most companies have avoided whips because of their complex animations and physics.

Flails would be nice as well and are underused for the same reason.

Its probably avoided for its BDSM association and not the physics... The WoW Warlock demon Succubus has a whip, and its not too hard to animate, but the demon itself is purposely sexed up in design to resemble a dominatrix...

@Dumac: I severely doubt that. Whips are rather difficult to animate well - EQ2 has a few of them, but they all look pretty awful. Moreover, it's hard to make whips that look good/epic. It's easy to make different sword, axe, and mace designs, but a whip is so thin and basic that it's difficult to make them look different from one another.

But mostly, I'd imagine it's due to the physics involved to make them move realistically. I somehow doubt games that are willing to put in demons, dark magic, war, and associated violence are in any way afraid to put in whips due to the fact that they're loosely associated with the BDSM subculture.

There aren't enough makeshift weapons around. This is why I like Fallen Earth; not only can you shoot people with good old pistols or slice them with a sword, you can also smash them with the handle of an axe, stab them with a pitchfork or crack them over the head with a shovel. Not to mention prying heads open with a crowbar in imitation of the world's most famous physicist (no, not Stephen Hawking).

Was always a fan of the whips and fist weapons. For some reason they seem so up-close that fights seem more like brawls than combat.

The voodoo doll from the original Blood game was kind of fun. But in all seriousness I would like to see more bard weapons. Special Lutes, Flutes, Maybe an enchanted Fiddle.

Those aren't weapons they are instruments, and are, in reality, pretty fragile.

Unless you are talking about something along the lines of a "Flying V" made of steel axe/guitar weapon those suggestions are nonsense, they'd shatter or deform on impact & then be useless as instruments, unless you mean as magical instruments knocking down or killing with the power of music.

Anyway back on topic, Nunchukas, full bo-staff, Kenpo/Amis sticks, Manrikigusari (chain weapon), full scythe, cestus, knuckle-dusters ( & situational environmental things such as bottles, chairs, lamps, hat-stands, fridge doors, tables, ladders & other everyday objects).

Skuz, these are video games. You don't use a lute isn't to bash someone over the head with it, you play a song to mess with their minds. That's what bards did in EverQuest, and they were badass.

The one which can most efficiently kill my opponent.

I prefer big heavy 2 handers of any type. Slow attacks but BIG BIG damage.

I've always been a fan of non-magical staffs, small machine guns, huge claymores, longbows. As I progress through a game, the way in which the character manipulates these items generally becomes more important than the graphical skin.

I like weapons which allow the character to become more real in their world, such as picking up a crowbar or taking the shotgun found behind the counter.

Personally, my favourite weapon in the various MMOs I've played is the 1400mm howitzer.

Honestly, I want a rapier... along with the appropriate animations. I know every game with swords has a few rapiers there, but not a single one (to my knowledge) seems to realize that different swords are used in completely different ways.

So let me expand this, I want a game where using a rapier is different than a saber, which is different than a claymore, which is different from a gladius, etc.

I'd be happy if they took out 90% of the pointless weapon variations in most games, if they replaced them with more weapon-specific attack and defense animations.

All of the above, just please model them accurately! As a medievalist i find it appalling that most MMO's have no real idea of the physical mechanics of using melee weapons.

Take Aion for instance, no one can swing a two handed sword that is so ridiculously big. Deava's in aion are so whimpy they cant fly for much more than a minute, could they seriously swing a over sized two handed sword that is nearly twice their size? I find it really annoying, i know it's an artistic style to have weapons over-sized, but it's stupid and has no basis in any form of reality.

I was so relieved to see AoC had weapons that looked and played like the real thing. Though all the mmo gamers who wouldn't know what it feels like to swing three feet of steel thought it was lame I tip my hat and salute funcom for presenting melee weapons in a realistic light. If only more MMO's would do the same!

The more weapons the better, but please make them look and feel lifelike. And if you dont know what that is like then head to your local SCA branch and find out, they will be happy to show you.
