Monster play is a cool idea. Lord of the Rings is the first big MMO to put it into play. Basically, instead of AI running the monsters you fight, players do. You sort of have an extra character slot that is actually your "monster" account. From there, you log in and select a type of monster to spawn as and have at those pesky players.

Now LotR handles it in a battleground type setting. There is a zone (or maybe collection of zones) that you can spawn in and fight players who wish to encounter smarter-than-normal monsters. As a monster, you die pretty fast (as most monsters do) but they are expendable and you just respawn and hit the players again. There are other balancing factors as well.

I hope that one day an MMO develops monster play to the point where players spawn anywhere players are. Imagine if you could play monsters and spawn in WoW instances where players are. That would make life way more interesting for the players!! Although, most people like the safety of the dumb and overly predictable AI - so you would have to offer extra rewards based on the difficulty of the match. Maybe the more times your party was maimed and killed by the player monsters the better loot the end boss might drop. I dunno. Lots of room for exploits if not done properly.

Monster Play is a mechanic used by Lord of the Rings Online. It's a feature that lets you play as orcs or other monster types to be a PvP enemy. You can't play these monsters in PvE, it's a PvP option only.

Why does the Klingon in the screenshot for this story look so weirdly disproportionate? Giant head, odd unnatural looking stance, tiny, skinny body....

That looks... bad.

I watched that infamous leaked beta video yesterday and seeing the characters in motion didn't look all that much better to me.

The little hope I had for this game is more or less gone. *shrug*

It's an old video. I wouldn't make such judgements on a game still in beta. I especially wouldn't make them based on a video taken most likely from the first couple of playtests.

On that subject? What is it about the video that makes you think you won;'t like it?
