I'm still waiting for a free trial or some kind to show up. I'm interested in the game, but don't want to spend the money for the game itself and 1 month to test it out. My wallet is hurting enough during Xmas as it is.

This IS a free trial. Obviously, you need to get the referral from someone already playing, but this allows you to play until level 15.

I've looked over the page carefully, and it doesn't seem to mention any kind of a time limit.

Oh really? Well I guess that's what I get for assuming it was just like any other referral program.

So if someone refers you you can create an account without having to pay for any months? Sounds too good to be true.

Now I just need to find someone willing to refer me and see if this game is all I hope being a super hero would be :P

Okay, I'm a little late, but if you could send me one, I'd be happy to try it out. If I like it, I might buy it.

I wouldn't do that to a friend... That's just mean.

I only just hit up their store too and saw a bunch of new costumes. Maybe the pictures don't do them justice, but they seem rather weak for the price. I could be wrong. I still don't know how I feel about a subscription MMO charging for so many extras that other games put in. And yes, I know CoX does theme packs, but maybe for some reason their theme packs seem way more full of goodies for the buck? Illusion maybe?

To punctuate the costume comment - if I take the Dark Demon set, it looks to me like existing costumes only slightly modified. The head is the existing demon without the bottom jaw. The wings are the current dragon wings smaller. Those spines I have seen elsewhere too. Same with the belt, it looks like a mash of other pieces.

Now, I do get that you can unlock in game. The only difference is buying them unlocks account wide where as unlocking in-game is just the one character as I understand it.

I dunno. The first costume packs seemed like they had effort put into them.

The price of the CoX packs are much higher, typically. You could buy several of the typical Champions packs for the price of 1 CoX pack.

It should be noted that most of the new items in the C-Store are items already available in game, or released with prior events. They've just made them available for purchase for people who didn't have them yet.

Could be just the illusion that CoX offers more in a pack to where it feels worth the price. I guess with CoX I also like the additional animations and fun powers. Like the self-destruct with the robot (which I have yet to use in any meaningful way) pack which is a fun extra. The magician pack offered some great costume change animations too.

It is true that these are all possible unlocks. And it is probably also true that Cryptic is going to work the income angle hard. I am curious where Champions' retention rate is compared to where Cryptic was projecting it would be.

The retention rate is pretty low I think. Certainly much lower than Cryptic would have hoped for, possibly even in a "uh oh is this game going to survive" kind of way. Anecdotally I don't know anyone who purchased the game that is still playing, including one friend with a lifetime sub (ouch). Additionally, offers like this typically occur under one of two conditions:

1 - The game has acheived maximum exposure to the core audience and is unable to grow without bringing in players from beyond the core audience (see WoW)

2 - The game is losing players at a signficant rate and new blood has to be brought in to save it (see WAR, Tabula Rasa). Additionally, referral programs encourage people currently subbed to stay subbed.

"For every two recruits that subscribe, you get 30 days of game time in addition to the points."

Wow... every two subs I get, I get 30 days free?! Wow! So amazing!

/sarcasm

Every other bloody MMO has a one for one deal, are they bleeding money so badly that they have to make it a one for two deal?

I keep this list updated with referral keys for those of you that would like the trial and don't already have friends who play:

http://www.retailmenot.com/view/champions-online.com

All I ask is after you use a key, please "X" it out as not working since every key is only good once, then I'll know to post a new one.

Thanks & Enjoy!
