Stay within the server bgs imo, keeps it reputable amongst eachother on that server. Creates a competitive community. Cross server makes it... entirelly anonymous. :/

I'm not really sure how anonymous it can get with the number of servers EQ2 has.

Given EQ2 has 0 PvP right now going all servers BGs is about the only way to get enough toons to start one. EQ2 community is very PvE focused, single server queue would mean PvP with the same 12 people over and over again. Except on the overflowing PvP server of course which will probably be on its own as would the exchange servers.

I've been thinking of trying EQ2 for the first time. I don't know the situation with PvP in this game, but wouldn't this kill any world PvP that already exists?

Nagafen is the only active open PvP server in EQ2 (there's also Vox, Sony's exchange open PvP server, but it's a ghost town that can't be merged into Nagafen because legal real-money trading through Sony goes on there). All the other open PvP servers in EQ2 have been shut down or merged into poor Naggy, who was itself dying a sad death. And a good amount of the players left on Nagafen want to transfer off to PvE servers.

The biggest problem with EQ2's open PvP is that Sony allows XP locking (you can shut off mob XP, quest XP and discovery XP, and turn up to 50% of your PvP XP into AA points instead, for an ultra-slow leveling curve where characters can stay at the same level and twink themselves to death for months on end). If you're not the type of player who enjoys the "hampster in the wheel" method of endlessly retreading the same maps and ganking newbies, EQ2's PvP server is really no place for you. Twinked, XP-disabled, grey-conning players can two-shot you, and even if you *could* kill them, you wouldn't get any credit for it.

Any players who enjoy normal leveling and progressing to new zones have long since quit playing EQ2. It's quite sad, really. I wish Sony would address this issue. Unless this new BG idea encompasses some really compelling maps (and is not some regurgitation of the always-empty arena play that has been on every server since launch), I don't see it changing much.

Other more successful open PvP games like Eve Online and Aion don't allow XP locking of any sort at all, and you never hear even one person pining away for it on the chat. In fact, most players think you're crazy if you're not constantly leveling, lol. I wish Sony would wake up and address this issue in EQ2.

EQ2 was always stated to be intended for PvE only, and it's a shame that SOE capitulated to the demands of a few avid PvP'ers in their focus groups (SOE love their focus groups) - who probably never switched to the game anyway - and eventually introduced a form of PvP which attracted very few and pissed off a great many as a result of its impact on class balancing and other gameplay issues.

If this is an attempt to make PvP more attractive in EQ2 then so be it, but I don't see it working and the likelihood is it will be done in a way that succeeds in pissing off some more players!

SOE really needs to decide where its core market is for the game and then cater for that, they try and face too many directions at once and then muddy the waters further with trash like playing cards and RMT. Shame, it was a great game under Scott Hartsman and hasn't been the same since he saw the writing on the wall and moved on.

Yup, exactly. I tried their PvP "system" both on EQ1 and EQ2 and found it to be a stupid gankfest both times, due to their idiot 4 level range for PvP. FYI SOE devs, 4 levels up = nofrickinchance until you're like level 40.

In EQ1 my first PvP char was instantly camped at the spawn spot for the 2cp in his pockets. In EQ2, you couldn't walk out of the city into the nearby leveling zones without getting ambushed by groups of gankers. So how exactly do you level up again? Duh. I ended by just quitting.
