I'm looking forward to the next article as I have been wanting to get into research for a while now but all the variables seem mind bogling to me.

It's actually not too complicated, ME is the one variable people care about the most (This makes the item waste less materials when you make it, effectively making the item cheaper to produce). PE only lowers the time required to make the item, and most items can be built relatively quickly, so it's often not researched at all except for certain long-time manufacturing jobs.

Basically you spend time increasing the ME and PE of the item via Research to make it more efficient to produce, then you make copies (that can only be used X numbers of times) and sell them for profit.

The problem is exactly what Brendan highlighted, it's very difficult to get into for new players just because you will usually have at LEAST a 1 month wait to get your turn at a research station anywhere in highsec. If you want to get into research and can't afford your own personal POS, I recommend getting a covops frigate so you can run down your valuable BPOs to abandoned areas of lowsec where the queues are much more manageable

Great article. I am currently unsure of what I want to do in EVE and wasn't sure how the whole research thing worked. of course, I still have no idea what I want to do but for now just enjoying the ride.

[Prior comment got truncated, retrying.]

Or just use an unarmed small. I had an unarmed small highsec research POS up for most of a year with no problem. Place it in a low-traffic system with plenty of free moons, and log in at least once a day so that you can pull down the labs safely if you get wardecced. It would be cheaper to replace the small tower than it is to fuel a heavily armed large for a month.

Great article! Research is very much a fun thing for anyone to get involved in because it is a low yield amount of work once you are skilled and find your preferred routine.

I would also like to advise anyone in a wormhole POS to try and online at least one lab, as this is a great way to supplement a little income on top of your overall operation. You also avoid the known space war dec scenario, and the faction limitation of a high sec anchor.

Great series! Even a very new player can benefit from making ammo from extra loot that you reprocess. That is a great way to get into learning the mechanics around research.
