Lord of the Rings Online: Siege of Mirkwood went live December first, just one week ago. One of the most highly-anticipated features in Siege of Mirkwood was the new skirmish system. Skirmishes are scalable, randomized instances that you and your party can enter after setting a few parameters such as the desired level. They're designed to be relatively brief and fit easily into gameplay time, as well as keeping things interesting with the random elements. As with any ambitious new project, the skirmish system has the normal allotment of bugs here and there, but Turbine seems to be on top of them, and overall player response has been very positive.
Today, Turbine released a new series of screenshots from the skirmish system in Siege of Mirkwood. The screenshots offer a sneak peek at several different foes you may encounter, as well as some familiar backgrounds. Enjoy them in the gallery after the jump, and if you haven't already, you can learn more about the skirmish system here.

INORITE?! That fell-beast design has got to be the stupidest thing I've seen come out of LotRO in a while? Whatever design director signed off on that model must have been drunk that day.
I mean seriously... it looks EXACTLY like a flying Tyrannosaurus-Rex. What was wrong with the design as used in the films (probably by Alan Lee)?

There was nothing wrong with the one from the movie but Turbine does not have the license to use it. They have to use material solely from the LOTR books. That's why Frodo, Sam, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Gandalf, etc look different in game than they do in the movies.

I just wish they'd take the time to totally revise the character models (I could live with the mobs).
I mean, Lotro's environment (world) is superb; in that whether or not it's technically amazing is irrelevant, as it certainly does it's job by pulling you in to a vast, lived-in and believable world..
..only to have that immersion rudely yanked out from under your feet every time you see a player character.
And don't get me started (again) on the female NPC's who walk Middle-earth as if they've soiled their pants and haven't been able to find a bathroom yet.
My theory is that Turbine had the world design folk also do the character modeling (eek). Or that Steefel's 8yo nephew wanted a 'part' in the production so they let him do it. Or that they spent all their budget at the time on the world, and then suddenly realised they had player characters to create as well..
I love Lotro, but each time I play it I find myself wishing the characters were updated, tis all :S
And I was also hoping that skirmishes were to be more than 'waves of mobs'.

I've personally never understood why some players don't like the character models in LoTRO. Give me a LoTRO elf's ears over a WoW elf's ears any time!

hehe yup i'll give you that, Seffrid.
it's just the rest of the body-parts and animations (and jumping - argh jumping is awful!) that make me cringe =)

The Landscape god is named Orion I believe, and his team is an absolute professional team of great artists doing what is still the best looking natural environments in MMO's today(Age of Conan's trees SUCK hard).
The other artist, named Floon, is the polar opposite. When he actually goes out of his way to try and do something, it ends up horrible and becomes bitchfest fodder on the forums. He constantly posts how when he tries something that isn't mandated by his superiors, like fixing dwarf hauberks, it ends up being a huge headache and no one rewards him with praise(no praise for F'ing up things? Really?). He uses his own screw ups to justify not putting effort into improving noticeable and long standing issues(not one person ever complained about dwarf hauberks, and you'd be hard pressed to find anyone that didn't read his post that could even point out this error he tried to fix). He's the road block for not getting nice costumes in game, or varied armor in the high end, or armor that someone might actually like to wear. He's also the roadblock for getting nice stuff into housing, or a housing system that is better than 1999 standards.
Floon is the reason almost all the landscape screenshots that win weekly awards for LOTRO generally have no character models in them.
