They can say it's not dead because the only game with thousands of servers and the popularity to maintain them is WoW. If anything WoW is the aberration. MMO's have always had smaller, niche player bases. This will not change.

Im getting closer and closer to re-trying WAR. I thought it was awesome...until I passed T2. Then the game just became boring and uninspired...class balance became horrendous...and action disappeared. I have 5 characters all hovering around LvL 29-32. It just became far too painful and not fun to continue around that point. Id wander for hours each night looking for the same experience that T1 and T2 provided, but I would never find anything going on.

I was just so confused how the game could be so engaging out of the door and so quickly degenerate as it progressed. I've gone back several times, but they seem to put so much work into improving T1 and T4...forgetting that there are 20 levels of bland in between.

Here is the one thing I just do not understand. It seems like such a simple thing to encourage RvR at ALL levels. PUT YOUR GODDAMN QUEST OBJECTIVES IN ENEMY TERRITORY. Why the hell would you think people would voluntarily wander into RvR lakes that seperate the two sides when the benefits to character progression are so limited. PQs, Leveling quests...they're all relatively safe and seperated by faction..and while there is nothing keeping players from opposite factions wandering into the opposing side's areas...there is nothing really encouraging people to do it.

The RvR lakes are great...but they're not integrated in any meaningful way into the zones. You get this sense of "Here is where you level and PvE. And over here is where you RvR." This kills "War is Everywhere!" Because it becomes "War is over there...sometimes if people aren't too busy leveling over here where the quests are."

Now you can point out that this is less true someplaces (Badlands where people are funneled into the Gunbad entrance area is a good example). But for the most part the line between places for PvE and places for PvP is very defined. People want some risk to keep things interesting. This doesn't mean that you lose items and all that "Hardcore" BS. But if you're trying to do a quest and the enemy is camping your quest objective and you have to call out to the region chat for help...well RvR has just begun. You NEED that kind of interaction to help develop community and breed conflict.

Pardon the WoW reference (you rabid haters), but think back to the pre-BGs lvl 60 days when Strangelthorn Vale was a nonstop back and forth battle for the right to quest in peace for a few minutes. There were days when guilds would pour into the zone just to clear the way for their low-level members to accomplish a few quests. This is the kind of design that inspires continual conflict. Whatever you think of WoW-Today, WoW-Yesterday provided a far more engaging PvP Faction-Conflict experience then WAR ever has. And it has NOTHING to do with class balance, graphics, and even to a some extent performance. People CAN and HAVE ignored those issues if they have a reason to fight other then earning points to buy an item.

So...I have kind of rambled and wandered off topic. My apologies.

Mythic, I believe in your intentions, and I want you to find a way to turn this around. I drive past your building several times a week and hope that you guys remain in business and in the area.

Honestly, I feel like all the things u griped about were things that i had issues with. Things seem like they have gotten alot better.

If they could find some way to do cross server scenarios without it breaking the whole victory point zone domination factor Id love it!!!

Number of server smatter a hell of alot more when the game is a pvp based then a pve game. The way the amount of servers have declined means that there are a hell of alot fewer people playing the game and that is the death knell of PVP based game. NO people means no one to fight againts unless u like hitting on a door for 20 mins. Sorry i so used to like this game when it came out but started to hate the more changes they made to it and the father i progressed in the tiers. They punish you with diminishing returns on killing people and basicallly forced you to become part of the zerg and takes keeps to progress your toons ranks. They removed the Fortresses and now all you do is have capital raids that no one likes because they are bland or are bugged to hell(generals body guards anyone?)

Haha, oh yes WAR is thriving so much that servers continue to shut down and people on the forums still complain about balance and populations. For the people saying the lay-offs mean nothing. Try comparing Mythic's lay-offs to every other MMO developer. Yeah, they are one of the few and that is due to WAR failing.

Also, since when in the hell is WAR an RPG? There is NO role-playing in the game. No decisions, consequences, just RvR and mind numbingly boring PvE. As for the RvR, last I checked it was a farmers dream, that is all RvR revolves around. Especially with the absence of the forts everything is reduced to zerging. Those few who do the small elite groups are fun, but rare and the dueling nonsense is just that, nonsense.

For those fanatical folks who refuse to see the writing on the wall. WAR is dead, the budget was there for these updates and more will come. The game will fade to something akin to Vanguard. A few thousdand dedicated individuals who really love the game. If that is your gig, then more power to you.

"A few thousdand dedicated individuals who really love the game."

Thats all you need. Games with similar playerbases are doing just fine (like vanguard), does it really make a difference to you in the end?

Maybe its dead for you, but not for its remaining fans. Just get over it.

Like I said, other servers shutting down doesn't affect my server, aside from other players merging in, which can affect population balances. The only thing I care about at this point is 1) WAR keeps running, and 2) my server is well-populated so that I can enjoy the game.

Since WAR has done everything it can to alienate its players yet still retains a loyal fanbase, I doubt the game is going anywhere soon. At the very least, I would expect EA - God bless their little capitalistic hearts - to keep it running long enough to reach profitability. They've already brought staff expenses down to a minimum and new content is pretty much non-existent, so the cost to actually run the game should be minimal. There are MMOs with much small userbases still running after years and years.
