With two content updates behind the game and 2010 looming just over the horizon, we spoke briefly with Bill Roper on a multitude of Champions Online topics. Specifically, you'll find discussion on Cryptic's free weekends, Nemesis Confrontation and even a hint at future updates in the coming weeks and months.
So follow along after the jump for our talk with the executive producer, and be sure to keep up-to-date with the latest news on the game through our Champions Online page.
Massively: So first of all, how did your second free weekend for Champions Online go on Cryptic's end?
Bill Roper: Very well! We had a lot of people come in and play the game, especially considering it was a holiday weekend with a lot of other noise out there in the online and retail space. We saw both new and returning players, and a good number of those started or re-upped their subscriptions based on how far the game has come in the past 3 months.
How would you say the community has reacted to the update and free weekend?
We've received great reviews and praise from our players for encouraging more gamers to get into Champions Online through these types of promotions. We're really proud of what we have, and we want to be able to expose it to more and more gamers around the world. Things like free weekends really help get the word out about the game.
In what ways do you feel Nemesis Confrontation strengthens Champions Online?
It is focused on supporting our players that want more for both end-game content and play that centers on groups. Using the Nemesis system as a catalyst for this, we also allow players to share their villainous creations with each other and bring a new random twist into the Lair structure. Nemesis Confrontation is the first step in us combing existent game systems with new technology to create compelling new content and challenges.
Will smaller, more frequent updates be the norm for Champions or will future updates require a few months of development time but add considerable new content?
We're really doing both. We like having something always around the next bend for our players to look forward to, but we're also putting more time into some bigger updates that you'll see in 2010.
Where is the majority of the team's focus post Confrontation; any hints at what's in store for the holidays?
In December, we're going to be launching an event that takes advantage of new technology that allows players of any level to fight side-by-side against a common enemy. This is huge because it allows us to balance an encounter for a number of heroes regardless of their level. The event will be based around traditional winter holidays and has some until now, unseen rewards that should really have players smiling and enjoying the season.
Thanks so much for your time!

LOL I like the idea of putting them near holidays but in the long run it's a bad choice. I played for the first time during the Thanksgiving thing they did but i never got into it because i got to spend all of 2 hours on it because... It was the thanksgiving week! Was good to give it a try but based on what I saw, wasn't impressed enough to buy it. Didn't help that I ran across a mission that bugged on me twice and took over an hour to complete instead of the 5 minutes it should have.

Nice to see some positive and complimental comments for a change, rather than the usual doom-mongering. As a result I may give this game another go, thanks!

I'm still having fun with the game. I live in California so maybe that is why I don't experience any of the lag or patcher issues other people report. The game plays fine, I like the powers, the zones feel dynamic with explosions, cosmic villains popping in, etc and I really like when they have the cutscenes in missions. I just wish there was more of it. More voice-acting please. It helps the immersion for me.

@CCon99: Agree 100%
I'm sure people would feel the exact same way if it was SOE, Blizzard, Bioware, or any other company getting constantly positive reviews/articles about their games.

Well, it's obvious that a lot of people have abandoned Champions Online. I personally think it's sad. I think it's a very beautiful game with it's comic-book appearance, and I've seriously never had as much fun making a character for an MMO. Most MMOs, there's only a dozen or so templates, and everybody is one of those. The only differences between the characters is the hair style and the gear... and the gear... and the gear. I play Warhammer for PvP, and CO for fun :) But yeah, it seemed like the servers were down entirely too much in the beginning. I'm surprised that after all this time, new MMOs are having that kind of problem.
As an aside, I don't think a PvP-heavy MMO will ever be able to allow this much freedom in character creation, and it won't allow so many different kinds of fun abilities. PvP-balancing is all about nerfing. You put everybody in a bundle, stand 'em up, and lop the top off anybody who stands hand and shoulders above the rest. With PvE, you can add new abilities. I think a lot of people went into CO wanting to find the powersets that "own." Like a lot of people who approach a thing for all the wrong reasons, they were very unhappy.
But I'm not sure if a PvE-oriented MMO can survive. PvP is both always-changing, and yet too much the same. I find myself bored with Warhammer's endless oRvR PvP, but it is very addicting. I feel a need to return, like I don't with PvE.
