I've told the story here before, but as this post relates directly:

Getting lost is likely the primary reason I become an MMO fanatic.

My first night in EQ (not long after the release of Kunark), my buddy who encouraged me to start playing wasn't on, so I made my High Elf Mage and proceeded to fumble my way around town, finally wandering out into the forest between the city and Kelethin in the dark of night. I got lost out in the forest and likely ended up running in circles for some extended period of time. While I got frustrated, I was also absolutely amazed the I COULD get lost. At some point, I looked up and saw that the sky was beginning to brighten and, having previously no concept that the game actually had day/night cycles (I'd been playing with almost zero foreknowledge of the game for maybe 45 minutes or an hour), I realized that the sun was coming up. I finally found my way back to the city in the early morning light and was enthralled in a manner I had never been by a game before or likely since....
