In game ads just aren't enough to cover the costs for any title. CPM campaigns (which most in-game ads are) payout a extremely low amount of money. You basically need Trillions of hits a week to make it work. To get that many hits you basically have to keep ads in player's face more than they would want. Add to that the fact that the ad market in general has dried up during the recession and you have a spell for disaster.

Having tried it with several titles, I can say that it just isn't feasible right now. Maybe in a year or two things will be different but for now that just isn't a logical stream of revenue.

Dungeon Runners sort of tried that. Didn't work. (Probably didn't help it was a bad Guild Wars clone from the same company that published GW)
