I like the creativity and gameplay of Wizard 101, but not so much the art style nor the volume of grinding & jogging required.

Regardless though; $20?!
That's not a microtransaction, that's the price of a game.

Free Realms is introducing housing in mid-December also, and non-subscribers get a free apartment while subscribers get a spacious two-room house with expansive gardens for no additional cost.
There'll be a MT mansion too, but even if that is expensive as anything else available in Free Realms it'll be half the price that W101 charges for a tiny spherical hideaway!

I have to say though, since having a go at W101 out of sheer curiosity a few months ago, it's an absolutely top-quality game. For me in particular, who as an old fart has never been able to understand Magic-style card games, it's taught me a whole new system, and I even managed to play a pretty good rl game of Pokemon cards with my boys the other day.

W101 really is a fun game. For Kids? Says Who? Not me, that's who. Just because there isn't vulgar language, or body parts flying doesn't make it any less fun. It's built well, the combat is simple, but challenging.

I will agree, the grinding can wear down on you a bit. But that's minor in my book.

I was absolutely amazed by how much FUN Wizard101 was. I have never been into card-combat but I ended up falling in love with their combat system.

Everything in the game seemed top notch except for one thing: The free content had a horrific brick-wall. All of a sudden all of the quests led you to an area that you had to PAY to go to.

I liked Free Realms model where you just could not accept quests that were premium content. Wizard101 let you start, go to the tunnel leading to the area and THEN it told you.

If they had had a better system for separating premium content from F2P I know I'd still be playing and would likely be subscribing.

I've played nearly every new MMO to come out in the last five years and NONE have the fun gameplay that Wizard 101 has. I keep coming back to it. Players of Magic the Gathering/Pokemon would and DO love this game as well as people of all ages. They boast nearly 5 million subscriptions.

The game is GOOD, FUN, and totally ADDICTING. The new houses, as with all microtransaction items are also available for ingame gold. The new houses run 100,000 gold each. Seems like alot, but it's not really.

Also...there is NO Water School. That would be the Storm School's House. The person who wrote this article obviously has never played the game. The opening sentences provide a very discouraging view of a tremendously fun and engaging game.

As far as paying for the game...it costs a whole 9 dollars a month for unlimited access or you can purchase zones individually. There's even a Family account plan where 2 or more accounts only cost 6 bucks a piece. It's worth it...Mounts, Housing, Gameplay based on "Spell Decks" that create different encounters every fight, full voiced quests...EVERY quest. I love it, my kids love it, you should try it.
