Star Trek Online may be set in a very unusual place for an MMO, but Cryptic is going the distance to make sure all the standard MMO concepts are represented. Fleet Actions effectively sound like raids, except since massive space ships can't traverse dungeons they instead enter huge battles that take everything your captain's got to succeed.
Whether you're dealing with a massive Gorn invasion fleet or one massive Borg Cube, these battles look to be quite intense. We're certainly reminded of the opening to Star Trek: First Contact, and hopefully that impression remains true once everyone gets to experience these battles first hand next February. Check out the trailer after the break!

Video looks fun. It would be nice if they'd zoomed out, to give an idea of the scope of the encounters, the number of players involved, the overall spatial tactics, etc. Will an encounter be instanced so everyone who wants to can jump into a given fleet action?
@Pogger: EVE has a scanning mechanic, I think a tutorial on it has recently been added to the game. Ships launch probes to track hidden objects and sites, particularly wormholes, which lead to dangerous "unknown space". Players can get lost in there if they are careless.
Warping through planets and moons is a frequent complaint about EVE; a lot of players find it jarring, some don't care, others invent in character reasons why it happens (warp bubbles phase ships out of sync with primary space).
Players use moons, via POSes, but it's very abstract. Proper planetary interaction is promised for this year - podpilots will be able to influence/govern/nuke-from-orbit the dirtside population for profit. It's intended to connect with DUST514, CCP's "coming... soon" EVE-themed FPS.

Has anybody noticed how proud they are of space combat, but how completely reluctant they are to show us any ground combat at all?
We haven't seen anything new ground wise for ages, and last time I played it at Eurogamer, ground combat sucked. Hard.
