Star Trek Online may be set in a very unusual place for an MMO, but Cryptic is going the distance to make sure all the standard MMO concepts are represented. Fleet Actions effectively sound like raids, except since massive space ships can't traverse dungeons they instead enter huge battles that take everything your captain's got to succeed.
Whether you're dealing with a massive Gorn invasion fleet or one massive Borg Cube, these battles look to be quite intense. We're certainly reminded of the opening to Star Trek: First Contact, and hopefully that impression remains true once everyone gets to experience these battles first hand next February. Check out the trailer after the break!

I hope they have friendly fire on so you will blow up your fleet if you don't position yourself right. Those shots just looked like a ton of ships with glowing strings running from one through another to another. It looked like a cluster ^%$*.

I have to agree with you on this one. I'm planning on buying this game (or receiving it as a Christmas gift hint hint) when it releases; but they really have to clean that up. All those lasers made it look like someone was playing pick-up sticks. That might be fine if it was a console/button-mashing game but STO on a PC is serious business!

While I doubt that phasers will have friendly fire, they have already confirmed that ship explosions do cause a large amount of damage to whoever is nearby.
So, that's something.

Wouldn't friendly fire with phasers be an even BIGGER cluster&^#%? Obviously, someone who graduated from Starfleet Academy to become an officer on the bridge isn't going to be so crappy a shot as to hit their own allies.

You'd hope so anyways or at least there would be safety-checks built into the computer firing program to prevent from happening. The question is whether the game will let you fire THROUGH the allies ship ignoring that ship exists to hit the enemy, if the fire hits your ally ship or if your ship won't fire till you move and create a clear line of sight to the enemy.
I think the later option would be best.

Kyle and the rest... yes i was talking about what Wes said. It looked like people could fire through each other in the video. If a starship is firing at something and hit another starship one would think that it would damage that ship and not pass through. The video looked like pickup sticks like someone above said and havign friendly fire and LoS requirements would make this a non issue.

sounds more like their version of a public quest.
I'll probably pass on this one now since as far as I can tell there's no real space exploration. Which is the whole point of the IP.

I still think there should be an option to run huge guilds in one ship, say the large sovereign classes, either guild or single player with officers, giving players a choice.
The battles would be hilarious as hundreds of folks try to run a ship and when it explodes, ahh the stories we would read........bring s a smile to my face just thinking about it.

I've been playing Eve through the intro month. What kind of exploration is there? I can't see anything but all the little windows open on my screen.
Plus... I warped through a planet today. While very pretty, the graphics and starscapes are useless.

We will see. I don't trust these video interviews anymore. I got all excited with all the WAR ones and then Warhammer turned out not nearly as cool as the developers pimped in their video.
I remember when, in WAR, they had a big video how there was no stupid kill X monster quests. I think he said "bears". The fact is, if you killed a bunch of bears to get to the guy who wants bears dead, he just gives you a reward. Which turned out that in each camp there was one guy who didn't like one type of mob, but you had to actually meet him first before the tally started (I think).
Yet, in WAR, there are plenty of NPCs who will send you on missions to kill X mob, never accounting for the fact that you might have just been killing those mobs less than a second ago. *sigh*
I'd love to hear a beta tester's feedback on Fleet action, but I am willing to bet with the limited beta time testing that Cryptic follows that there has been little to no testing of this particular feature.

For some reason, this didn't hype me up. Rather it did the complete opposite.
For some reason, this actually pushed me away from the game even more. I'm not sure why, but I was feeling repelled. Maybe it just seemed sort of shallow to me, I'm not sure.
Chances are I'll still buy this game, I just didn't find this fleet action very intriguing.
