Did the Lindens ever do what they said they would and make unapproved third party viewers against the TOS and if so is this approved?

Actually, Linden Lab never said they would do that. They *did* explicitly state that they would not ban any viewer software, and that they would only ban users based on TOS/CS violations.

Almost everyone seemed to read the text to mean exactly the opposite, though, which is weird, because it seemed quite clear.

I've never played SL (can't seem to register successfully), but there's something I've always wondered about, and that's this "viewer" business.

Do I understand correctly that viewers are basically different GUIs for SL? It's an intriguing bit of nomenclature.

It's a client-server architecture. The 'viewer' is the client-side software (essentially the downloadable part that lives on your PC). Depending on the build and platform, it's generally 30-60 megabytes. The user-interface is, of course, a part of that.

Essentially it's a 'viewer' for SL, the same way that your Web-browser is a viewer for the Web.

"Restrained Life support. Thanks to RLVa by Kitty Barnett, Imprudence now supports the Restrained Life API for BDSM items and scripted gadgets."

Will SWTOR support this?

:P Kinky bastards!

The Restrained Life API is also used in some presentations and some machinima work and a couple of games. Essentially any case where it might be beneficial to manage a willing party's viewer experience.

OMG, You made me laugh there. "The RLV is used in some presentations."

I can see it now, here is IBM having their yearly staff conferences inworld and the time for the big bosses presentation is here. The staff all put on their collars and cuffs as directed and the big boss says the magicwords... ".lock" followed by ".nadu" As a one the entire staff of IBM fall kneeling to the ground, legs parted, hands placed palm upwards, particle chains leashing them from the board table to their collars.

An executives wet dream!

Ah ha, I see. Thanks Teteru, that's a great analogy. I've been wondering about that for years! :)

It all reminds me of all the crazy stuff in SL.

You know, the one story that the SL writers haven't covered here is all the shinanagans that went on with the building of Mouse World...

I got a brief note about it, but was led to understand that it had disappeared before it had really started.
