Wow....setting phasers to phail over box art...the Blizzard fanboys have brought it to a new level. I have a novel idea, let's judge this game on it's vision and gameplay when it is actually released!

With the box art and all I've read, at least, as far as I can remember, It sure seems to be focused on the whole "warfare" thing a bit. I mean, when kirk was swimming in Tribbles, he didn't phasor the whole lot of them, did he? I have the feeling that this is just going to be a generic MMO with its own little twist. Sure, the most recent motion pictures features armed conflict, but the bulk of Star Trek was peaceful and diplomatic problem solving.

Which, honestly, would make for a very boring game. :\

I would recommend taking off your rose-tinted glasses and watching the Star Trek shows again - some of it was about peaceful diplomacy of course but the "bulk" of it (and the most popular episodes/story arcs) were about conflict and battles as a result of a breakdown in diplomacy.

Bit disappointed with the box art - was hoping for something a bit more classy and minimialist rather than cartoony but it isnt that important as its only the box cover! Hopefully it isnt indicative of the game style as I was really hoping for something like Eve in the Star Trek universe (i.e. mature but maybe not as convuluted!) and not Champions Online in space!

I am happy to put up with a flawed game that isnt 100% perfect at release as long as their are elements that are enjoyable and it is improving (MMO's are long term projects after all) as I am a fan of ST and am looking forward to playing in its universe. I agree the game should be ready on release but its a shame some peoples expectations of its quality are in the Delta quadrant!

I meant that in a lot of shows they never used weapons. I suppose I could be forgetting a lot... But still. I'm tired of seeing grindy MMO's with nothing but "kill 10 rats". Something like having a goal with multiple ways of achieving it would be nice.

Considering how in-depth Star Trek gets on Phasers alone, I'd say there's a lot of fighting throughout the span of the shows and movies. The missions parameters may have been peaceful, but space is harsh and conflict drives drama.

Diplomacy should come into play in STO but in a time when Klingons are aggressively expanding territory, lots of conflict is inevitable.

You know what my nagging fear is? The last time someone tried to make a mass market MMG with both avatar and vehicle based combat, it was Auto Assault. The time before that, it was Earth and Beyond. In both those titles, one mode (avatar) got the short stick. Cryptic asserts that it can provide quality content in two entirely different fields of play, but I'm not persuaded.

STO has neither wowed nor offended me, and I suspect it will end up just being kind of there.

You can add Pirates of the Burning Sea to that list.

The fact that folks don't remember that there was avatar combat there says all there needs to be said about trying to combine avatar combat with vehicle combat in an mmo.

:-p

it ain't easy.
