After we blow up an enemy ship do we have to still deal with the massive explosion of the warp core or is it simply asthetic?

In an interview, a developer stated that science vessels now innately target subsystems. Is that still the case, and how does that work?

How are all the different weapons balanced? Are phasers, disruptors, and other beams significantly more powerful than others, or are they better in certain situations?

Starships are often used as weapons themselves in desperate times. "Plot a collision course"

And if so, can we at least climb into an escape pod?
