I actually can't stand the balancing act developers go through in games. WoW's factions now battle against each other like two 3-day-old bowls of soggy Cheerios.

A Smuggler v. a Jedi/Sith of equal level -- equally balanced? Really? Maybe the smugglers will have anti-Jedi/Sith weaponry. That would be a hoot.

Jedi's were overpowered in the movies, they should be overpowered in the game too.

What I find amusing about the WoW comaprisons is that IRRC the decision to give Alliance Shamans and Horde Paladins was far more about PvE content design than it was about PvP class faction balance.

Regardless I'll happily take a bit of imbalance over the kind of homogenization that has occured in WoW. I really hope it doesn't turn out like Ridiculous has suggested and that the parallel classes dont just have the same abilities with different names and graphics.

Forget balance...

UO was one of the best PvP ever made in the MMO space, and they did not balance as such...they made warriors that could hit massive hard, archers that could do one shots against mages but if a mage got a Cor Por on you, you'd burn in seconds. EvE online..again...no real balancing, it's down to player choice, choose a support class or defensive class and expect to get beat up by offensive classes....it's quite simple really :)

Make each class enjoyable individually and let the gods sort them out on the battlefield.

If there is one thing that I remain sceptic about, it's this class issue with SWTOR. Sure it's always fun to have those "unique abilities", but not when you're on the receiving end. If I've learned anything about WOW's decision on shamans and paladins, it doesn't matter what the class does, it's going to be OP when you don't have it on your side.

It would be great if they could balance these types of things before the game launched, but from past experience, these things are impossible to balance.

Oh and there will be pvp don't you fool yourself. Did you think we were going to be in a galaxy far, far away deciding what color our lightsaber was going to be? Well maybe but the ONLY thing we'd be doing?

If both sides have all unique units, and each side claims the other is OP, then it kinda balances out doesn't it? Besides, people will complain no matter what the developers do.

I do agree on testing though. I think if TOR wants to succeed, the biggest thing it needs to do is extensive beta testing. Test until there are no bugs left. Other would-be WoW Killers like Age of Conan and Warhammer Online weren't helped by launching with missing content and a bunch of bugs. No deadline, just release TOR only after it's gotten extensive testing to ensure a bug-free smooth game at launch.
