...looks like War is getting WoW'd. That is Waiting on Warhammer's death.

I say this, not just as a cheap shot at War's plight...but to remind everyone that before War's eventual release, WoW forums where consistently pumping out Waiting on Warhammer threads for months if not years how this game was going to be death of WoW. I just wanted to point the gravity of how far War has come since then.

To be fair, they've said that about every game launched since WoW came out. Remember Vanguard? Lord of the Rings Online? Age of Conan? Hell, I recall a couple of people insisting that The Matrix Online would be the death of WoW. While I haven't even played WoW in a long time, I'm sure the forums are abuzz about how SW:TOR, DCUO, FFXIV, or any other forthcoming MMO, no matter how obscure, is going to kill WoW.

Yes, Iggy I agree...but as no where as near as to the intensity, volume and the insipidness of the Waiting on Warhammer threads.

PS: To add, the only one that has been really discussed of late out of SW:TOR, DCUO, and FFXIV, is SW:TOR. But thats like once or twice per month have that subject has creeped over into the General Forums (as opposed to their Off-Topic Forums). None of the other games have been mentioned to my knowledge. In comparison to Waiting on Warhammer threads, which where 2 to 5 times on a given day on General. /boggle

That is true, Warhammer was hyped to hell and back on the forums more than other games. I figure that's because of the MMOs released after WoW, WAR was the one most like it; two factions, battlegrounds, Orcs and Humans (though Warhammer Orcs are, in terms of lore, nothing like Warcraft Orcs) and a (percieved, in WoW's case) emphasis on PvP (all though I always felt PvP in WoW was pretty crappy, though this may have changed for the better in the year and a half or so since I played WoW seriously. WoW had always seemed like a PvE game with tacked on PvP to me). Obviously, those people were very incorrect.
I would figure the other big reason other games aren't hyped as much since WAR (and AoC to a lesser extent, though that one was also hyped quite a lot) is precisely BECAUSE WAR and AoC crashed and burned. People might be abit more skeptical now (though there were quite a few Aion threads on the WoW boards, before Aion's launch, though still not nearly in the same numbers as the WAR threads).

In any event, no single game is likey do dethrone WoW any time soon, and that game will certainly never be Warhammer Online. I still find myself hoping that Games Workshop will license a new Warhammer Fantasy MMO,like how Bioware is making TOR even though SWG is still running (for some reason, despite being a horrid game by terrible developers). That will probably never happen, though. Hopefully the Warhammer 40K MMO will be good. :\

I also want to add, if the game was smoother and performed better (on a technical level), and the classes were more balanced, and they had a cohesive plan for the game's future (which they may indeed have, or had before all this downsizing, but it's irrelevant because they're still fixing fundamental, crippling flaws in the game) then I'm quite sure the game and Mythic would probably be in much better shape. No, they'd never have anywhere near WoW numbers. They probably wouldn't even have a million subs. But perhaps they wouldn't be in such a crappy situation.

I cannot think of an iller-omen right now than the person in charge putting WAR on par with Ultima Online and Dark Age Of Camelot...

Picking on a corporate shill for being a corporate shill is almost too easy to be fun.

Here's one of my rules of thumb for life, in general: there's no point in asking somebody a question if you know what they're going to say, what they have to say, whether it's true or false. If EA/Mythic truly was committed to saving this game no matter what it costs, they'd say so. If EA/Mythic was winding the game down and just trying to milk a last half-dozen or dozen subscription payments out of anybody dumb enough to subscribe, they'd still say that they're committed to saving this game no matter what it costs, because otherwise they wouldn't get paid.

People need to calm down about this. EA does this every year. They let go employees and then consolidate. Most companies do this.

The only thing is when EA conolidates and lets employees go MMO's get shut down in the process. The only MMO EA hasn't shut down is Ultima Online and thats because the cost to keep it running is so small that it would cost more to move the server hardware in the end.

@Tom316

Yeah makes sense but seeing how it's their only other MMO that they still support doesn't make it a decent baseline to make that much of an assumption. If they had a history of doing this then we can all agree with what you are saying. I believe right now is just a passing phase that a lot of other companies go through. Most of the time those people who were let go will either move back into EA or get picked up elsewhere.

I think the people are just taking this more then they should, EA is a really big company.

I think the only game that will dethrone WoW will be the unnamed MMO Blizzard is currently working on. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it's Starcraft MMO but who knows.

"Also the obvious reason why it's not doing good is because it lacks Skaven as a PC race."

Amen, brother! That's the real reason the game is floundering. Skaven > every other race in any game ever.
