Today is a day where we should honor our fallen. Motor City Online. Tabula Rasa. Auto Assault. Asheron's Call 2. Earth and Beyond. Underlight. Shadowbane. Castle Infinity. The Matrix Online. The Sims Online. Seed. All of these games, and more, are MMOs that have launched, played, and then died.
Each of these games has a reason for why it was cancelled, but the outcome remains the same -- they aren't online today and their clients are nothing more than wasted code sitting on a disk. Some of these games were our introduction to the genre. Others were our favorite games -- the ones that could trump even the largest names in the MMO business.
So Massively readers, which dead MMO would you like to see be resurrected? Tell us some stories as to why you pick your game of choice, and drop them all in the comment box below. Mourn with others, we encourage it!

Yes - Pre-NGE SWG. ran that from closed beta until I just couldn't stand it any more. I liked the Creature Handler. exploratiion and taming was interesting. quite a challange at times.
E&B was fun, did beta on that as well.
Rather than rez of an old MMO, I"d really like to see Anarchy Online get a complete interface revamp - that's a very good game, very nice for trade, craft, team play, solo play. it's just good all around. but the UI is a stumbling block at times.

1. Pre-CU Star Wars: Galaxies. Without a doubt.
2.Tabula Rasa. If there's one thing it did right, it was immersing you into it's environment. Drop ships bringing new troops (instead of pop-in respawns), Control Points (some NPC towns) flipping control between us and the Bane. When I played it, I felt very into the world.

Yes, I know the mighty Al'Kabor Mac-only server. And the tiny EQMac community is probably the best community I've met since I've played my first MMO ...

I would like to be able to play Asheron Call 2 longer than the week i did because of the total emtyness of the severs.
But i would like Motor City Online aswell, mainly because i never got to play it.
Maybe Need for Speed Online wil be someting like it.

Tabula Rasa, hands down that game had potential, and if a company OTHER than NC soft had it, it would have never been shut down. I hate NC soft as a company because they fail at nearly every game, City of Heroes a beloved game, has remained the same for 5+ years, and they are just waiting for it to die. It is truly sad to see a company use the facilities on it's veteran players. Tabula Rasa was incomplete at launch and everyone knew it, NC soft rushed them and knew the game was gonna fall, the only people who really cared about that game were it's GM's whatever was left of the development team.

I would LOVE to see a Shadowbane remake with better graphics and controls, less bugs and hackers. The premise behind that game (freeform city building + meaningful sieges and conquest) was amazing.

As someone said earlier. SWG pre CU is available to play now. Over at SWGemu. About a thousand players are logged in and playing every night.
I'd love to see AC2 brought back.

It's funny because I remember the SWG "glory days" as well as anyone, and while it was a fun sandbox, it had some pretty extreme weaknesses. I guess the folks claiming they'd "go back in a heartbeat" to a pre-CU/pre-NGE server, don't remember the broken skill trees and abilities, useless crafting trees, and lack of questing or other content. I do, because the SWG I played ignored all of those things in favor of hardcore player city roleplay. But once all those people left for WoW, the golden age was gone anyway -- it wasn't really NGE that did it. I won't say NGE was a good idea; it was a wretched one, and SWG that first year after NGE really sucked. But I still play SWG today, and the game has come a loooooooooong, loooooong way from NGE. I really wouldn't trade it for pre-CU anymore. The only thing I'd want back would be the skill trees rather than classes. That's it. Other than that, it's a significantly better game today than it ever was, it's really that simple.
If I had to pick a game I'd want back, hmm. I think that by now, had they been able to stick with it, AC2'd be a pretty fun game. Ditto with UXO, I'd really like that to have come out. But honestly, most of the games that die, deserve it.

Agreed. I was in with SWG from the beginning, and while it did have its great aspects, it always had significant problems too.
Some people make it sound as though, prior to the NGE, everything about the SWG game and its gameplay was perfect. Again, while the game had its great aspects, it always had problems.
It's fine that people miss the pre-NGE game; I understand why they do. Preference, however, is not the same as perfection. Some folks are letting their nostalgia cloud their memories just a little bit, I fear.

I miss auto assault. i have fond memories of my mastermind character, roving around the highways, with a merry band of robots blowing the CRAP outta everything i met. I was so sad to return one day and find it gone. any community emu projects for it?
