The ceo has nothing to be ashamed about, WOW is the highest grossing revenue provider for a country in history, listed as number 10 in frances GDP for income........for france. No one can compare themselves to the AOL of games for simplicity and automation and a business model that programs weak minded people to keep paying a monthly fee for the mediocre.
The only thing this ceo need concern himself with is getting those graphics into 2009 and DX11 mode, get the avatar creation and the avatars themselves looking good, then more folks might take notice. I dont care about whether the graphics are anime, cartoony, shivaesque, or done in realistic cartoon relief, they just need to be up to date, and scalable.

While having a distinct point of view in art design is extremely important to create an immersive, cohesive and believable world, having high quality graphics is of little value.
MMOs that have focused too heavily on graphics have suffered for it. MMOs benefit more from being accessible to as many players as possible and offering a fun gameplay experience.
For example, WoW has, by many standards some of the poorest graphics on the market, and compensates by having some of the gaming world's most brilliant, fun and immersive art design.

I think it's important to try and keep performance requirements to a minimum but at the same time being able to function beautiful graphics.
I have to bring into example Half Life 2 and Guild Wars.
They both are dated games but have amazing graphics for it's time and do not eat too much of your computer either.
