Setting
Torchlight's setting is somewhat fantasy with a little bit of steampunk -- right now I'd say it feels something like 75/25 leaning towards a unique fantasy world. Can we get a little more steampunk, though? I think that would help set the game apart to an even further degree, and the art style already supports it.
Of all the many strengths it possesses, story and setting are the game's biggest weakness. It's not that what's there is necessarily bad -- it's just so very sparse. And really, that's understandable given the 11 month development cycle of the game. Hopefully the next year and a half of development will allow for a world full of places, people and stories ready to be pillaged by players eager to experience it all.
I assume the world is going to be expanded upon greatly, so why not have a Steampunk kingdom of some kind? Personally, I like to imagine this is where people like the Alchemist flock towards to study and progress their powers. A place so grand that it plays host to many legends and tales of old -- plus it could have a cool name like Alornia.
Maybe Runic will see fit to fast-forward the setting some time, allowing for the exploits of the characters in Torchlight to become legends. It's not exactly original, probably because it's not a very terrible idea when dealing with turning a world into an MMO.
Player vs ?
So much of what makes this game fun is dungeon crawling, and thus much of the gameplay is going to be just that. I mentioned guild PvP earlier and I do think that would be a whole lot of fun in a game like this, even if PvE is an innate strength where hack 'n slash crawlers are concerned.
Boss encounters and challenging "Deep Dungeons" (Hey, not bad) that are essentially dungeons made for groups are where a vast number of players will thrive. I'm not even sure PvP will be a large focus at launch, although those are my words and not Runic's. Ultimately, the team has only so much time and energy to properly develop both PvE and PvP aspects of a game. I'd wager that much of their time is going towards getting as much PvE content up and running in time for launch.
Dueling? Probably. Large player skirmishes? Less likely, although hopefully -- even though I was never very good at online dueling in Diablo II.
Dev of Personality
Runic Games is obviously full of people with wonderful personality, because it's flooded Torchlight with a light of uniqueness. My biggest hope is for the team to do the same thing again with the MMO. The leveling, loot and satisfying crunch of combat keep me coming back to those dangerous dungeons over and over, yet it's the soothing sounds, music and art direction that make me want to come back day after day.

I actually listened to a podcast with several Runic devs -- Schaefer being one of them -- and they said the camera options they experimented with in Mythos were not a favorite idea of theirs. So, if there are camera options, I imagine they'll be simple.

This game is incredible. 18 months is a long time to wait. Diablo 3 might be nearing release by then to steal Torchlight MMO's thunder.

Bang for the buck there is really nothing that comes close. I am really enjoying this game. The pet thing is finally done right. Is it me or is it one of the best side-kick programming ever? I am more likely to do something stupid than it is. Any games that sees you having to "tear" yourself away from is a good thing.
Its so nice to play a game full of bugs/lag/boredom.

Really a phenomenal game, been obsessing over it for days. I'm very excited for the release of modding tools - the folks over at the Torchlight forums are chomping at the bit to get them (hopefully later this week).

Wait, there was a story? All I thought it was about killing monsters and then killing bigger monsters until you get to the biggest monster and killing it too.
Not that it's bad, I haven't had so much fun just killing stuff and having my jaw drop at the loot I found for a loooong time.
Although the end boss wasn't very intimidating and hard, back in Diablo 2 when I saw diablo I was about to poop my pants and yell "HOW DO I BEAT THIS GUY, OH MY GOD" this guy was pretty meh.
Oh, and, don't forget the brilliant music. It was extremely atmosferic even for a game like this. Looking forward to the MMO.

One of the first mods that was released, in fact by one of the Torchlight programmers (possibly Travis Baldree, not sure) is one that simply adds a "respec potion" to the potion vendor in town. It's only 3000 gold and lets you re-assign your skill points. Handy for when you buy a new ability and realize that it just isn't that useful. I haven't respecced yet, I'm waiting for more skill points I want to recover, but I'm glad the option is there now. One of the main things that Titan Quest added that I wish had been in Diablo 2.

This is destined to become a WoW copy when it finally becomes a MMO.

Coming Soon: World of Torchcraft!
But seriously, it will be interesting to see what they do with this as an MMO. Hopefully it doesn't end up as just another Wow-esq title.

I'm still quietly interested in the Torchlight MMO, but I have to say the current release wore thin pretty quick.
Absolutely loved it when demoing - hence the purchase - but a few days later it's just lost the sparkle for me; hideous balance, no story, wildly freeform builds, the joy of loot cut short when it becomes clear that Enchanting makes 99.9% else straight-to-pet...
I do find it to be a technical marvel and innovative (if Diablo III doesn't release with a messenger-pet or mobile loot-to-cash converter I'll be miffed), but for me personally it had the cost of a DVD and the same lifespan.

I've been trying the demo and the game feels really cool. The music and some of the voice-acting really remind me of Diablo 1/2 and Warcraft.
The Alchemist class is awesome, really close in terms of skills to the Necromancer from D2 (the damage absorption shield=bone shield, imp=skeletons, golem=golem...) but with a tree with some nice melee improvements.
I think the game needs some more stuff:
1st - for the DVD release: a couple of cinematic trailers in the transition of important moments would make the story more meaningful and dramatic. Or at least a couple of machinima trailers,
2nd - More voice acting for secondary characters and for the monsters, some animal sounds would go great in the pet,
3rd - Include an expansion of the storyline,
4th - Include the best mods developed by the community,
5th - A multiplayer option PLEASE.
For the MMO release they should:
1 - Definitely improve the pet and make it level as well,
2 - Increase the visual variation of the characters (don't care if there isn't gender selection),
3 - 2 or 3 more classes (something similar to a Druid would be great for example),
4 - Keep the isometric view for everyone. This would set it apart from most other MMOs out there.
5 - Expand the lore of the world.
6 - They must define their subscription model. I would recommend them to follow a model like DnDO. For me that is the best f2p model and they could charge subs if people wished so.
