I'm really tired of people harping on about "real risk" and "real loss". Every time you get into your car you're running the risk of losing life and limb, that does not make your daily commute to work any more exciting.

I think the comments stated here is one of the big reasons why Eve is so successful. There is real consequence to dying. You loose lots of money and sometimes skill if you are not careful. This results in groups dedicated to griefing and exploiting every loophole there is in order to make sure that you loose everything. Eve is a huge, dangerous place.

No one mentioned when Star Wars Galaxies started. Not only did they not tell you how one was to become a Jedi, once you became a Jedi, you were overpowered but you also could be permakilled. Death would mean loosing your Jedi powers. The timeline was in the portion of Star Wars history where the Jedi were all but extinct. They were not as thick as thieves as they are now.
This was one of the greatest parts of the game but yet every focus group and every survey led the developers to the assumption that most people wanted to play a Jedi and were not happy having to keep their lightsaber hidden if they were one of the handful of Jedi on a server. The constant changes by the developers nearly led to the destruction of the game...but now everyone can be a jedi and never fear loosing their lightsaber.

Adrenline rush requires risk. Finding that balance for game designers is not easy.
