Interesting article, and in many ways, I'd be forced to agree, but there is something of a flip side of this.

The investment money often tends to follow the "proven" and now that MMO's are a proven idea, there's the temptation to force new games to fall within the lockstep of what's gone before.

Think about it for a moment, the primary type of MMO is still Fantasy World, Quest Driven, largely down the line of descent from UO and EQ. Mechanics are improved, graphics are improved, the experience within the game is buffed and polished and improved... but it's still Son of UO. (Which isn't necessarily a bad thing... the current gen of games are very good).

Then, you have a few other genres out there, where again, you get a certain me-tooism. City of Heroes has proven that a Superhero MMO is viable, so now we have CO, and in a year or so will have DCUO.

Then, you have a few games where they are either banking on an already existing IP to carry a MMO (be it a movie/TV show, such as Star Wars or Star Trek, or a non MMO game being taken to MMO-ness, such as the impending GTA-as-MMO games).

I haven't heard numbers of how Cities XL is doing, but it's the only recent game that's truly broken from the pack in that sense.

It's interesting, that while people talk about innovation in gaming since the first gen designers, there is a certain level where even the most modern and hip game designers haven't matched the innovation of the trailbreakers, of Meier, Wright, Fawkner, Crawford and others.

Well, EQ is really just a 3D graphics version of DikuMUD so it goes back much, much further.
