that reminds me how DAoC Crafting was rewarding...

making 10, if not 20 times the same item, to try to get a high quality item. Was still button smashing, but at least there was some attempt to make it worthwhile to spend more time doing it...

i hope someday someone works to make crafting really fun and challenging.

The best way to be successful in crafting in FFXI is to not do it. :D

I burned millions getting my clothcraft to mid-80's back in the day, and gave up when I realized how expensive each synth would be beyond that point. And I had the income of an active HNM shell member!

Though I guess people have had a little more success with consumable creation - cooking, woodworking (ninja tools/elemental staves), and alchemy.

Yeah, to this day people still have no real idea if moon phases, player direction, or whatever influence crafting. Only think I think most can agree on is to get your crafting level as high as possible above the recipe level, like 40 levels or more if possible.

Crafting in FFXI was saturated though, and most people started turning to sponsoring Dynamis runs to sell the currency, doing BCNMs and other events for money drops, or mercing endgame or hard to get gear. It takes a lot of time to level a craft, or an insane amount of gil. Unfortunately because of so many crafters, its hard to make real profit from it except by selling back to other crafters, margins are way too small.

The best advice to make money for an average player is just to save all beastman seals you get, find a BCNM you can do with trusted friends, and do it as often as you can. Do the other events like it, like KSNMS, ISNMS, some assault runs, the WOTG ACNMs, and keep at them. Crafting is a tremendous money sink, especially since you must also level multiple sub crafts to 60+ for some.

I really really hope that crafting is much easier in XIV. I tried to craft in XI, put a lot of time into it too and barely scratched the surface because of the difficulty, so I sorta just game up and decided to spend my time enjoying the other aspects of it.

I loved this game while I played it. There was just something magical about it that even games I played for way longer (looking at you WoW) failed to capture. If it wasn't for the very high price of failure I would still be playing it today (well and spending 10hrs looking for a group, which was the norm back when I played). I can see a game and its systems adding complexity and challenge but most mistakes were pretty fatal and made it really hard to want to go on.

I just hope that XIV is a good challenge but not the grindy, one mistake sends you back to the stone age, thing that XI was.
