I didn't really enjoy Fallout 3, but someone needs to unplug Interplay.

Wow lot of bethesda \ fallout 3 hate in the gamepolitics.com link. Amm i the only one who likes the original fallout's as well as fallout 3? While I would love to see a fallout MMO from Interplay they haven't always treated the fallout franchise with respect, remember fallout brotherhood of steel anyone?
Anyhow should be a interesting one to watch.

Interplay is just a name. Anyone who made Fallout is long gone, so handing it back won't accomplish anything. Interplay is clearly incapable of getting investments, meaning that if Fallout goes back, it'll likely end up in bankruptcy liquidation and who knows who will get it.

I'm on Bethesda's side here. Interplay failed to get the appropriate investment to start the Fallout MMO nor have they actually started development. I predict Interplay loses badly and goes the way of Bullfrog.

Say what you will about Fallout 3 but the law is the law. Interplay needed money and they sold their rights to Bethesda. If Bethesda didn't buy those rights then Interplay may not be around today. The simple fact is Interplay needs to back down as it no longer owns the rights to the Fallout series regardless if they did a better job at it. You can't go sell something then expect it back once it see's mainstream sucess. Remember, it doesn't matter how good Fallout 1 and 2 are most people have only ever played the better selling Fallout 3.

this is if they sold the rights....nobody, no matter how hard up for cash would sell the rights, you license them out then you have things you need to do and they do also, so saying something sold is sold and can't be taken back...i ask was it sold or licensed?

From what i've read Bethesda now owns the rights and they have licensed those rights to Obsidian to make fallout new vegas. People sell their rights every day depending on their needs. A company about to fail would happily sell a game it hasn't used in years in order to inject much needed funds into its system. To me it sounds like interplay has run out of ideas and wants to milk a franchise which Bethesda has driven into the mainstream market. Besides, a fallout mmo is sin. Who wants their favourite game turned into a grind fest full of 12 year olds.

In this case Interplay actually sold the rights to Bethesda and then licensed the rights back for the MMO. Why? Because Interplay was entirely bankrupt. Not "we need to reorganize" - bankrupt, but "we have to liquidate" bankrupt. The State of California actually shut down Interplay because they had failed to pay their employees for months. A functional company can have the luxury to license rights without selling them. Interplay was not functional. Problem with licensing rights is that you generally only get a cut of the profits once a product is actually shipped. Interplay need a large cash infusion immediately, so they had to actually sell the rights completely.

I don't really care if another Fallout game or MMO is made just as long as Bethesda doesn't get a chance to screw up the story any further.

As stated above, Black Isle is no more, and Interplay is just a word. I don't really have any confidence in Interplay producing a descent Fallout game, but after Fallout 3 I have even less in Bethesda's ability to do so.

Interplay is so horrible. How long have that had these great IP's and done total crap with them? Hey Fallout guys, do I need to remind you of Fallout Tactics? Interplay wasn't doing jack with them and that prototype Fallout 3 looked freakin horrible.

Ok, you don't like Bethesda's take on it, ok, fine. Whatever. That doesn't mean Interplay is going to do anything worth playing with it. The only reason they want the rights back is to ride Bethesda's tail to more money and try to capitalize on Bethesda's hard work.

If Bethesda had not gotten the rights and Interplay made that Fallout 3 they had planned, we'd all be conveniently forgetting Fallout 3 along with Brotherhood of Steel and Fallout: Tactics when we talked about such a great franchise.

Yeh have say I'm rooting for Bethesda too, I never played the original Fallout games so it's probably a lot easier for me to do so but I quite enjoy Fallout 3 even though it does remind me of Oblivion a bit, which is fine too.

I do believe in Bethesda being able to make a good mmo, I would doubt Interplay A LOT, I even doubt Bioware at this point because they are so used to making linear games (with choices but still...) But I think Beth could do it and I'd be heartenned if they finally got the full Fallout rights finally.

Either way there's a lesson here, stick to your own original IPs? ;P

Honestly, my opinions here are divided. I think Interplay deserves a shot at making the MMO and IF what they're saying about Bethesda trying to block their attempts is true, then I think something is seriously wrong there. What with the other stuff, thought, I'm starting to think Interplay is kind of looking like they DID screw up their chance and they know it so they're scrambling around trying to find an out.

Interplay didn't even create Fallout. They were just the publishers. Black Isle Studios is who created Fallout.

And Black Isle is now Obsidian and Obsidian is making Fallout: New Vegas. See, it's back in the original hands.

The thing is, Interplay DID have a chance to make a Fallout MMO and failed to do so in time. If you look at the original agreement, Interplay sold the Fallout IP to Bethesda, who then leased the rights back to Interplay to create a MMO based on the IP while Bethesda went on to make Fallout 3. This licensing was contingent on them having a certain amount of funding and progress done by earlier this year.

Bethesda created Fallout 3 which is wildly popular. Some people don't like it, but plenty of people do. It's brought the Fallout franchise name a lot of recognition and made it worth a lot of money.

Meanwhile, Interplay has failed to live up to it's terms of the licensing agreement for the MMO and Bethesda now want the rights back so they can either do it themselves or shop it out to someone else to do while popularity for the franchise is high. The fact that Interplay is counter suing is not a big surprise, it's fairly standard procedure in these sorts of cases.

In the end, the courts will decide who was right, but from what I know of the case, it sounds like Bethesda is wholly in the right here and Interplay is grasping at straw.

If they do bring out an MMO version they better not be still using that same Oblivion engine. The physics and object collision detection are a joke.

I dunno. reading this article made me excited. Say what you want about Fallout 3, it was a great game, Oblivion was a great game, and I played the HELL out of Morrowind. Nothing even comes close to what Bethesda does with their games...Two Worlds was a sad attempt, Demon Souls is amazing but really, not even close...however, the original Fallouts were just as amazing when I played them...I almost want to say Fallout was the godfather of American RPGs. I believe that Interplay can still do amazing things with Fallout...and I'm anxious to see them. Bethesda's formula still has some life left, but Fallout for them is another Elder Scrolls, between Bio-Ware, Bethesda and Interplay, we can see great American-style RPGs.
