mmm lol I can't help but feel this article senario is a rip off from another site.....like say mmorpg? Or is it them plagerising you? Or am I missing the point as you all (mmonews/reviews sites) spam the same daily news? Just reading this made me go meh?

Admitted mmorpg.com is going down the pcformat/gamer problem pages but this is just a twist on the same theme.

Nevermind the fact that mmo's are getting stale, so are the support sites it seems!

Good read though if thats any consolation.

So you didn't like it but you... liked it? I am confuzzled, good sir.

Also, Anti-Aliased is not usually a mailbag format... it's usually just my opinion column. Thought I'd change it around for a week. Just one. So it's not like this is recurring or anything...

And, well, don't almost all publications have a form of the "send mail, get mail answered" column?

I guess if you look hard enough for a conspiracy, you'll find one.

mmm how did this get posted, I haven't approved it? Just my rambling thoughs on the state of gaming journalism is all, no offence but everything is looking the same where ever I go.

It's disheartening to say the least.

Oh, I approved it. My apologies -- I do that because some people have trouble with the approval process thingy.

Yeah, I can understand your frustration. Things really do look the same no matter where you go. We try to make them different here at Massively though. We go for talking with our readers, getting feedback, taking different approaches to games and really getting in the thick of things.

Sure, we post much of the same news -- news is news, and it's not going to change from site to site. But, I like to think our features stand out because of our unique writing styles and approaches to our games. We love the games just as much as you and we want to pass that love along to everyone who visits. That and some snark. :) What's a gaming website without snark?

But, I hope you stick around with us. We'll try to spice things up for you around here -- honest.

Ha! You sneak, approving your reader's comments even if they have second thoughts.

I too am a person who writes so many things but decides to not publish. A way to blow off steam against some idiot commenter... or writer.

Hmmm, interesting legal concept here, couldn't an unpublished comment be classed as private correspondence, therefore you publishing it without authority are breaking copyright?

:P

The idea of only allowing players to create characters of their real-life gender would fail particularly hard in the current crop of very alt-friendly MMORPGs.

In WoW for instance.. I have four level 80's, a 71, a 70.. then the other classes at lower levels. I'd be pretty goddamn sick of it if they tried to tell me that ALL of them had to be male. As it is mine are about half and half, with two male and two female level 80's.

I like to make both male and female characters. That would suck if they made you choose. It's a little strange for someone to actually care what sex their character is, but then I guess it just means gender roles are still engrained in people's minds.

I wish more people role-played. silly people and their lack of creativity.

A also usually go 50-50. As almost everyone, I'm an altaholic, and I have 9 characters on my wow account - 5 female and 4 males. It adds a bit more variety for me if I switch between genders from time to time - watching a male's back all the time can get annoying, and the same is true for female characters as well. However, I do think that a game restricting character gender to yours would be nice, as long as it uses an effective system to accomplish that.
Also, although I am a BIG fan of runescape, don't you think that it is level based? Sure, the skills are divided, but in the end a big part of the game is about leveling them.

I don't think roleplaying is a dying art. I just don't think grind-based onlin games designed around Holy Trinity mechanics have anything to do with it. There are plenty of appropriate places to roleplay, both in the actual world and online, but trying to do it in an interface meant to optimize raid performance seems quixotic at best.
