Guild Wars is awesome.

+Great gameplay/lore/general game design
+Easy access to play with your friends
+No server queues
+Lot's of things to do before you even start thinking about retiring

and no monthly fees really makes this a game worth playing.

Guild Wars is the game I always go back to. Whether it's because I'm burned out on other types of games or I'm so strapped for cash I can't spend the $15/month for EVE or WoW, I end up reinstalling GW and playing it for months on end like my life depended on it.

Hmm, as somebody who played through all three GW campaigns and who's currently enjoying WoW, I think there's definitely room for both.

I don't know if I'd agree that WoW is bigger. I mean, GW is HUGE especially if you consider all three worlds (Prophecies, Factions, Nightfall). I dunno if there are any hard facts out there about the size of the worlds in the two games that makes debating it a moot point, but GW certainly feels immense when you play through it.

Pre-searing was one of the most amazing things about GW...having a tutorial that was a pretty, idyllic environment that lets you get used to the game mechanics and level up a number of times before going out into the "real world" was a masterstroke, and one I'm that I'm disappointed won't be in GW2 (not that you could do exactly the same thing since the story's different, but they've said they won't repeat that model in GW2, which I think is a shame).

GW is gorgeous. It's still the best-looking MMO out there, with Aion maybe being the exception (I still find Aion's character customizer to output sometimes odd-looking characters).

One of my absolute favorite things about GW, though, is the camera accel / decel...I have no clue whatsoever why other MMOs don't do this. It makes everything so much smoother and that much prettier.

Plus, GW is the only MMO other than WoW that I think did a really great job of using storyline to drive the grinding that sorta defines MMOs. I read every quest dialog, and a lot of them were funny. I liked the mix of "basic" (or as some might call it, old-world) dialogue and contemporary language / humor. I think they did an excellent job of marrying those two.

And I think that GW's over-arcing storylines in each of the three campaigns were more successful as narratives than any other MMO I've played, including WoW. For instance, I have a level 65 Hunter in WoW and if there's an over-arcing storyline, I couldn't really tell you what it is...and I'm playing it now.

Of course all the things Rubi mentioned are great things. But let's not forget one of GW's greatest contributions to gaming: Its soundtrack.

I believe Jeremy (and Julian) Soule's work on the three core GW games is, without question, the greatest music ever created in the history of video games. Sure, there have been great tracks in other games, for decades, but as a complete body of work, the Soules created no fewer than three dozen very strong tracks that follow a leitmotif-style approach to storytelling and theming through music. It's truly brilliant stuff, and I think it's cool that you can buy the soundtracks (yes, I have a nice 'GW Trilogy' playlist on my iPhone)

In all, I think that GW is, as far as an MMO that's fun to play and delivers a solid experience, one of the two best and most successful MMOs to date, with the other being WoW. None of the other games I've tried...Aion, LotRO, WAR, SWG, DD, Champions Online, AoC...none of these has even come close. Sure, some of them (like Warhammer, in particular) have been solidly-crafted games from a technical standpoint, with their own merits in terms of gameplay elements. And some (like SWG) had much more immersive elements, like the ridiculously-deep crafting system and player-owned buildings & towns. Only GW and WoW have captures my imagination and delivered on the promise of a massively multiplayer game that was actually fun to play, either alone or with other people.

The Mesmer is what define Guild Wars for me. This class is the bane of melee and casters. As proof, whenever I play Mesmer, I get a lot of insults thrown at me from the enemy or there's a gang bang to take me out. Guild Wars and its chapters was the only game I played for 2 years straight. I think I have spent some $200 with DLC and so on. During that time, I barely played anything else. I hope when Guild Wars 2 come out, the PvP system will be even better, that's is another feature that I like most from the game.

*sigh*

You've weakened my resolve. I may have to buy GW2.

Ohhh... that's very true, actually. Tuesday night downtime is dreaded by WoW players the world over. Fair enough.
Criticism withdrawn >.>

1. @Ayonyx: the pvp isnt server vs server, its worlds vs world, sounds like the same but a worlds is not technically a "server", you are able to switch between them in just a second.

2. Guild Wars has also greater updates like WoW, when a new chapter comes out. There wasnt a server downtime anyway like it would be in Wow

3. There a now serverdows in Gw like "uuh we have to do some repair stuff on the following 20 servers" like it is in Wow every week (or 2 weeks i dont know..)
Im not saying Gw is "better" than WoW ( i think it is), but this is something every have to decide on his own. But the technical stuff like server downtimes is just better than in WoW
