A few weeks ago we brought you rumors of Planetside's sequelosity (really, the word is just too good to only use once). Since then SOE has been giving hints at the game here and there, including a blog post from President John Smedley who sounds as excited about this next Planetside game as we are.
Smedley says "To me, Planetside Next means we get a chance to take the essence of everything that was fun in Planetside and make it a lot better. Massive battles on a scale no other FPS will touch. None of this 64 player stuff. REALLY MASSIVE."
An interesting note is that readers immediately picked up on his use of "Planetside Next", and it's quickly become termed the official name. We spoke to SOE and confirmed that this is an internal working title, not the official one, so we may be hearing about a new title in the future.
Smed's Blog summed it up nicely: "Damn I love Planetside. I really do." We do too, and we'll keep an eye out for more news on this in the near future.

Freaking amen to the Smedley, do not want him in the design process. Let him just sign checks and leave the devs alone.

He's the president of the company, I'm pretty sure whatever he says is how it will go. That's how companies work.

well SOE has to do something for a sci-fi MMO since SWG is long dead and Bioware is currently putting the finishing touches on the coffin that will seal it away for good.

Good point you actually bring up. There is a huge wave of sci-fi mmos incoming. STO, TOR, ER, Jumpgate, Black Prophecy, etc etc etc...
Seems to be a new trend. It's fairly untested waters though. Sure we have a small amount of sci-fi mmos such as SWG, Eve, and the late Tabula Rasa, but we still don't know much about how the general mmo community will receive these games.
Would they prefer a WoW clone with a Sci-Fi theme? Or something drastically different? Perhaps Twitch based combat? Hell possibly Turn based?
I think some companies are going to lose a lot of money, but I suppose something like this is needed to jumpstart the Sci-Fi MMO Genre. It's necessary to find what is acceptable, what is fun, and what is successful.
GL to all the game companies. I really mean it, I don't want to see any company or game die.

Won't be able to hold a candle to Dust 514. SOE can't even compare to the minds at CCP.

Question.. Have you ever played EVE? Judging by that comment you haven't. Don't generalize something you have never played.

The first comment was legitimate even if it was somewhat trolly, everything else is off topic and makes me weep.
replying to the top comment. Dust seems interesting enough, but we can't even compare them without seeing how PS:Next looks. We don't have any solid information regarding combat, whether it will or won't have player limits, or how high the player limits will be, weapons, vehicles, graphics or ANYTHING for that matter. It's not fair to make any judgments on this game when we have no information about it.

@Satn - As Ichamur said, you obviously have not played the game. CCP are innovators. Whatever 'reports' (ie; made up) of lag and system crashes you heard, must either not exist or were quite some time ago. For the average user in EVE, lag is virtually nonexistent. For those involved in 0.0 with 500-1000+ person fleet battles, then yes there will be some lag. I would like to see any other game allow for the gathering of that many people in one area, and NOT lag. As it is, EVE has had over 51k+ users online at one time with stability. Hell, last time I was in Jita during prime time hours I was able to move about with ZERO lag.
Now as someone who has never played EVE, I wouldn't expect you to understand Dust's interaction with EVE (they will affect one another, and take place in the same universe). Nor would I expect you to understand the dedication and CONSTANT improvement CCP puts into EVE.

I would not take anything Mr. Smedley says seriously. This is the person who deliberately let Planetside die so that his super-spy secret agent game could absorb the player population when it came out. Which so far, it hasn't. We're talking YEARS of starved development, frustrated and angered players, and let's not forget, messed developer careers.
I don't mean to be a Smedley hater, but you have to count the costs of his decision as to what his product's customers would buy next, instead of letting them buy what they wanted. And those costs are measured in
1. lost revenue
2. frustrated and angry former players (like me)
3. the aforementioned careers of actual real people who worked very hard to develop the game and got shafted in their real life careers.
So let's not get too all worked up. Whatever is done will be done for SOE and Mr. Smedley's sake, and not the players of any of their games. They are a business filled with people that just cannot admit that their customers' wants and needs should actually matter in their decisions.

Frankly I'm stoked that he loves it, because if he didnt, I dont think this would be happening. As a 6year subscriber of the game(ok I took ssome breaks here and there) its still the only thing like it. I love the massive battles and i want PS2 NOW!!!!

Dust will be well done, but CCP is not aiming for massive FPS. Nothing I have played compares to PS when things were just right in balance and population. I do have great fear that Sony can actually develop and nurture a successor given their history...
The good news is that CCP will likely completely remake Dust when the current consoles' life cycle is over. My hope is that the next Dust will be on PC and be a better massive FPS!
