First, let me say I've played DDO before. I played in year 1, and a little in year 2. It's not that I didn't like the game, but it was buggy (as all new games are; just ask Age of Conan) and I find it *very* hard to merit paying to play a game. The only one I've paid for consistently is City of Heroes/Villains.

Their "buy it only if you want it" strategy has gotten me to come back and start playing again (and I've been playing nearly every day). So, I'm impressed with Turbine's strategy of F2P.
I've paid $20 to get some turbine points and unlock the warforged race (unlock my previous WF characters). I'm not sure what I'll spend the rest of the turbine points on, but I figured that I'd be paying $15-$20 in monthly subscription fees on another game, so I could merit $20 worth of points.
But it's pretty cool that you don't have to buy points. You can earn them by playing the game and getting favor. There is plenty of free content, and if you earn enough favor (elite difficulty quests), you unlock turbine points. Granted, it's not going to be a lot of points unlocked, but they're free and will probably be enough to buy a leveling sigil or two. (((Actually, there's been a few people do the math on it at http://tinyurl.com/yejf7w8 and you can rack up some turbine points fairly easily.)))

Contact me if you'd like a party member during your choose-your-adventure quests. I'll start a new character and play along-side the Massively 'CMA' character (doing only the cma quests as well). Maybe we can get a classic 4-man group of Fighter, Wizard, Rogue, and Cleric going?

as a former 'f2p' player that started about 1.5 months ago - i can say that while im sure the game could be done f2p, you are missing out on some of the most amazing content if you dont try at least some of the adventure packs out. imo 1 month free then subscribe is the way to go.

Tangleroot, threebarrel cove, Delera's tomb are all great packs that are great for experience (both for you and your character) Delera's tomb particularlly is the best 'graveyard/necropolis' style dungeon i have ever played in - the tileset is similar to the others in the game, but my cleric and i still experienced the oh shit this room looks cool and scary whats going to happen next feeling after almost every bend! (a very dnd feeling tbh)

in final, goodluck! and get the content!
