Spacebook: Most pointless feature ever.

Plus we already have a feature called COSMOS, which they are apparently just leaving to die.

I don't understand how anyone at CCP thought Spacebook was a good idea.

How the ability to send and receive emails, change market orders, and manage alliance stuff from out of game was a good idea?

How is it NOT a good idea?

"How is it NOT a good idea?"

Because it encourages more AFK play?

Because it's open to identity theft, and OOG stalking?

You do realise COSMOS will not be linked to any out of game information right? It's like a facebook page, sure, but for your character. No information about your out of game situation will appear in EVE after Dominion. COSMOS is entirely based on your in game activities.
As for the AFK gaming...I'm not sure that's correct. Sure, people will do stuff from out of game instead of in game, but frankly they'd be sitting in station while they did that kind of stuff anyway. Sending EVE mails, whether from in game or out of game, won't encourage any AFK gaming that isn't already there.
If you're implying people will be more likely to just mine in belts while browsing COSMOS, maybe, but I suspect the new browser will be far more likely to encourage that then COSMOS.

COSMOS has no links to any out of game information that isn't in the game already. I have no idea where you're getting this idea from, but COSMOS will contain no out of game info at all: it's like a facebook for your character, not for you.
As for encouraging AFK playing, I doubt that as well. People can send eve mails and organise corp details through COSMOS: it's not exactly something that's going to discourage playing. If anything, it will make finding a corp easier, and thus encourage PvP.
If you mean people will just sit in belts and browse COSMOS, then frankly you should be directing your ire at the new in game browser instead...That will be far easier to get distracted.

I second Tyranor here (as well). Managing stuff from outside the game is something I've wanted for a looong time. Props to CCP for pulling it off.

I know a lot of people are waiting for ambulation ("Incarna"), but while walking avatars and station interiors certainly add depth to the game, the sheer usefulness of COSMOS beat the crap out of any walking dummy by a long shot.

wasn't there a popular UI mod for WoW called Cosmos?

It was popular for a while yeah... it's been awhile though, and when I last played WoW a couple of years ago, it had pretty largely abandonned as it contained a lot of junk.

Its kind of hard to say this nicely really but half the comments on this page have to be the least thought out statements I've ever heard about eve.

A wow clone? Lol seriously? If it comes to that point then everything isn't a WoW clone and is an Everquest or ultima clone. But I have a feeling you guys are just trolling like crazy.

Secondly, if you've ever played EVE, or joined a corp, you'll realize that there really is no set up for communication amongst members. There's your own mailing and chatting channel. That's it. And the only way for corps to really have a great method of communication is to make their own website. I mean yes, its a good idea anyways, but its ridiculous for someone to have to go out and make your own website, often times paying for it, to run your own corp.

This will now make corps/alliances more together. You'll be able to search out other corps, see what the other members are currently doing, it'll be easier to send out messages and coordinate events. Hell, that's a big problem right now in my opinion. B/c whenever I join a new corp or alliance, you really have no idea who these people are and likely won't b/c its so massive. With COSMOS, everything EVE related will be combined into one neat package.

Like I said, I bet half the stupid comments coming from people right now are from people who don't even play EVE. I mean it would seem pretty damn stupid to an onlooker seeing the developers create a fb for EVE. But to anyone actually playing the game, its an excellent idea.

Yes, most good corps and alliances make their own websites. They will continue to do so. Much like EVE Voice, Spacebook just goes to show that CCP is behind the curve on how their subscribers interact.

I'll ask again, why doesn't CCP do some development on COSMOS? No, not Spacebook, COSMOS. You know, the exploration constellations? Don't worry, if you've never heard of it you're certainly not alone.

In fact, since they're recycling the name for Spacebook, CCP would probably rather you forget the abortion of a feature that is the COSMOS constellations.

Enjoy your Spacebook, I guess I'll keep waiting for -ingame- development.

Heh, I knew it. Over-zealous EVE-fanboy to the rescue!

If you'd bothered to look in post history, you'd probably realized the person who made the "wow clone" was just making a joke (pretty funny one too, I thought).

Also - so many things to fix in-game (how about fixing the *real* COSMOS stuff first?) - putting devtime to Spacebook seems like a strange thing... but I suspect it's all due to DUST. The EVE crowd and the DUST crowd need a common ground.. and COSMOS is supposed to be "it".

I'm cautiously skeptical, but if this allows me to manage some of in-game stuff from work through browser, I'm willing to forgive them.

Red Verses Blue use eve voice, its a great tool for anyone who is playing a little more casually than the hardcore alliances with voicecomms, forums etc.

The cosmos missions have really been surpassed by the epic arks, and the social side of eve has always been very important so i think that a out of game toolset is a great addition, especially when you see how extensible it is.

Anyhow, this is just icing on the cake for dominion, the main event is the sov rework.

Yes, the "eve is a wow clone" comment was a joke regarding the fact that there used to be a wow ui mod called cosmos.
