"X game sounds a lot like Planetside. I wish they'd make a sequel to that game." is something we've heard over the years as similar-yet-different titles have been announced and released. Well who says wishes don't come true? As it turns out, SOE is planning to "expand the Planetside universe with another game" and is asking players of the original for their input via survey. Rock Paper Shotgun picked up the scent of impending sequelosity, which is a word we've just made up that describes a sequel revelation of such ferocity that it slaps your jaw to the ground.
There are a lot of games, such as MAG, that are attempting a Planetside-ish experience. However, nothing new has really attempted the scope of the game, so hearing that another is on the way infuses us with a intoxicating blend of hope and curiosity.

I liked the concept and was in beta and bought the game, but was totally lost when I playing. I would wander around for literally 15 or so minutes looking for someone to shoot and when I did I would die in short order and re-spawn to repeat the process. Maybe a squeal would be better... who knows.

Planetside is the one MMO that I have tons of memories from and the only MMOFPS to get it close to right (to me).
A sequel is excellent news.
In the tiny chance they actually listen to the players and don't half-ass it, this could be great.

Is the original Planetside fun to play currently? I see that D2D is currently selling it for $5.

Well 5 bones isn't much to spend, I was just curious what the general vibe is about the game these days.
I've since been looking around YouTube. Seems neat, but I don't know if I can get past the dated game engine.

One comment - see the picture up there? Those things right there began the death of Planetside by destroying the balance of the game. They can be piloted by 1 person, and at launch, could destroy any other vehicle in the game save a bigger one of them. I have witnessed a 153/1 Kill/Death ratio by 1 player in 1 BFR (that thing ^^).
Real fun for that player huh? Well, guess what the other 150 players thought of 1 player being able to pwn them with no fear of dying. And guess how many of them kept playing after that happened a few times? /duh devs
Eventually, after over a year, BFRs were nerfed over and over again to where they could be killed by specialized tactics. BUT- anywhere you have a live BFR, the team-based ground forces - vehicles - aircraft gameplay was dead, as these things could take the fire of multiple vehicles and players, shoot them back with more powerful weapons and then just leave the fight when it got into trouble.
What a fun, balanced element to introduce into the game. ^^ that right there is what put a stake in the heart of the original Planetside, and it was done with smiles and handshakes all around in SOE's offices.

Yeah, let's not forget that SOE killed MXO, among other MMO's. More than likely won't bother with this.

It is true that SOE has caused much harm in the MMO world but they did so through tinkering with pre-existing games. They didn't understand the old maxim of, "If it ain't broke don't fix it."
But let me put things this way, Planetside was the red-headed step child at SOE and still drew in millions of players. Even now there are thousands of players for PS six years after the game has been out.
Planetside captured the one feeling that no other FPS has. Planetside is all about teamwork and numbers. Planetside is all about war and how the individual facets of war work together. Planetside shows that an army is more than the sum of its parts.
Because of this feeling the game will not work as a free to play game. Planetside was still an FPS in which individual player skill mattered. If the game becomes free with micro transactions than there will not be a dedicated group to play. I hope SOE takes a close look at the failure Battlefield Heroes was and keeps the game on monthly payments.
Planetside is five bucks on D2D. I can't guarantee that the fights will be a 300 free for all every hour like they were during the glory days but you'll still find those giant brawls during prime time. Give it a try.

They should send this survey out to former players of planetside. Just getting the opinion of those who play and not that of those who quit for one reason or another doesn't really give you the chance to find out what's wrong with the game and what they could do better.
I have many ideas but no way to get that to the developers.

Not the way Smed or Dave told it.
When speaking to both of them apparently the game didn't even cost 10 million and alot of the developers that were working on Planetside got taken over to Everquest 2 and Star Wars Galaxies because they were really far behind, specially SWG which they had a deadline to meet with Lucas Arts.
Dave said himself that they knew people wanted different designed bases and stuff like that but the people in charge wanted them to pump out an expansion which never got tested. The team didn't want BFRs and The Bending but they were told to come up with something quickly.
Just sounds to me like the people in charge pulled the strings and didn't care about the quality of the game and the developers had no choice.

Having played Planetside since it came out and watching the fan base die around it I'm kinda hopeing Sony doesn't release a sequel. Especially with the new MMOFPS coming out and I'm not talking about MAG.
CCP is soon going to be releasing Dust 514 their MMOFPS that is being developed by the CCP studio in Shanghai. What Dust is doing better is not only using the latest Unreal engine but also allowing massive fighting over territories and bases with ground forces, tanks, land vehicles, and air craft. To balance the forces, for one to call down a vehicle drop will require one to have earned the required force points to spend which is earned by game play. What makes this game even more Epic is that all this fighting isn't going to just be on one planet, yay Vanu owns all the land masses again. :p The battle is going to be fought on planets from the EvE Online universe itself. Not planets with the same name but the actual planets that ppl playing EvE will see. The entire correlation hasn't all been explained yet but CCP is hinting that what happens in Dust will effect in EvE some part and vice versa. So playing Dust will have a more impact then just taking bases. All this from a game CCP is releasing for console only with no subscription fee and the dedication they are putting into the same with EvE which to say came out in 03 and coming December will release its 11th expansion all which have been free for subscribers.

Unbelievable.
I'm utterly overexcited. I am already planning on going on ahead and either upgrading my desktop or spending the dough on a kick-arse laptop, just for this game.
I. LOVED. Planetside. Easily the most fun I've ever had in a MMO.
Platoons of 30 people air-dropping on top of a base out of multiple
Galaxies(think C-130, but airplanes), with 15 people defending the
fully-mined roof, 50 more inside the base building itself, 30-50 on
the ground outside the base fighting off the main attack force which
is attacking the main gate with everything they've got, 10 snipers on
the hill trading shots with snipers on the Base Walls, Infiltrators
trying to sneak into the base to hack the Vehicle terms, and the
Control Console, amidst all the craziness. Reavers doing missile runs
over the base, Liberators dropping bombs and avoiding Anti-Air fire
from AA MAX suits and Turrets.
Chukka-Boom Chukka-Boom = yer dead TR and VS.
3 Pounder MAXes before they switched it to Anti-Vehicle, with Engis behind them = You can't take this Tower, beeyotches.
Lol @Beamer.
MagMowers.
Sniping from the top of the Crater. no more target-rich environment in Gaming history, than when there is heavy fighting in the Crater and you are standing up top looking down on it.
Infinite Bridge Battles on Cyssor.
god I loved that game so much.
It was shameful the way they killed it with their silly caverns and overpowered Gundams when what the players truly wanted was a massive base re-design. Hopefully they learn their lesson this time, and don't mess with what makes the game fun.
I can't wait for Planetside NEXT.
DO IT RIGHT this time, and KEEP IT RIGHT.
