The latest trailer for Final Fantasy XIV is both lengthy and a blend of in-game and CG footage. Honestly, we're not even sure why Square Enix is bothering with any of the CG, because we'd be fine with everything being rendered in-engine. Still, it all looks beautiful and wonderfully imaginative in a way that you'd expect from a Final Fantasy game.
So, what information can we glean from the trailer? Well, there's probably going to be a card game to play and, uh, you'll be fighting monsters you're probably familiar with, but in a nice nostalgic way.
Beyond that, the video has some intermittent text -- as many Japanese RPG trailers are want to do -- and more of that big ship battle to soak in. Oh yeah and cat girls, there's always cat girls . See the video after the break.

The Japanese and their cat-people....

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't the Mithra exclusively female? As a contrast to the Galka being only male I assume.
I don't know if that's been changed for the new game or not but unless I hear otherwise, it's pretty safe to assume that when you see cat-people in final fantasy online trailers they're female.

@ttvp
The Mithra were female-only playable(there was an NPC male Mithra in one of the later expansions), but there's no saying for the Miqo'te(we can assume the same though). But the Galka were NOT male-only. The Galka were a gender-neutral race that reproduced through reincarnation. They just happened to look vaguely masculine, but they weren't actually male. But yes, we can probably expect the Roegadyn in XIV to be single-gender/gender-neutral like the Galka. I think SE is going for the races being the same, but reimagined in a new world, with new cultures for each race.

I think when you see catgirls in any MMO, it's pretty safe to assume they're MALE lol.

Mmkay... but where is the gameplay?

According to a interview, only about 60% of the trailer is CG. Some of the easier to notice game-play parts include the fight on ship, and the scene with people chatting in the cafeteria. If you're interested in FFXIV, be sure to join our super friendly community fan-site. FFXIVCitadel.com

The 'card game' is not a card game. The scene is in inside of an adventuring guild, and the adventurer is being offered a choice of guildleaves plaques that allow access to various missions and quests.

I don't know how these games get so much hype it just looks so meh but all the Final Fantasy and Asian game fanbois seem to swarm websites and love it all. I tried playing some of these japanese games and they always have emo characters and horrible cheesy storylines.

Kyle didn't you cover FF before? Shouldn't you have known that's not a card game but the guild leve system? Or did I mistake you for another writer?
It's a nice video and that's about all you can say about it! ^.^

TBH, I've been following along closely with FFXIV (same as Kyle, as he's totally frothing about this game) and I totally didn't know they were guildleaves. I didn't know they would look like that. Surprise to me.
Plus, you know, we can make mistakes. :D

Sorry if that came off as harsh, I was genuinely surprised, (not to mention wasn't entirely sure if it was Kyle who wrote them or not, though I thought it might be..) the leve cards have been around the block already and are on the official site..
But you do have to keep with a lot with what you do here. :)

Final Fantasy’s just gotten a bit too “cute” for me lately. I feel like I’m reading a manga with all their games, complete with teenage-level melodrama and cutesy comic relief characters. The art is always beautiful, but I feel like there’s a definitive lack of substance or edge missing in the last few games. This trailer, with its vague nonsensical phrases (friendship FREINDSHIP!) and melodramatic stiff-faced characters just seems to remind me of all the boring moments I had playing FFXI.

Despite the Tarus and the cat girls, FFXI's backstory was actually pretty dark. I imagine the generic "themes" of friendship is supposed to translate over to "you'll meet up with people in game and do quests and form lifelong bonds!"
The trailer is a bit underwhelming, though; especially compared to the stunning 6-8 minute intro to FFXI.

I think the friendship part is supposed to point to party play and getting into social situations in the game, it is an mmo it's nice to see someone sticking to the massively part of it... Also this is for the Tokyo game show and give people an idea of the game not really for a big marketing thing, nice to see though.
