Well, didn't they mention that they want to add 'real monsters' to the powerhouse for this very reason?

@drjones

Yes, sir. One of the changes coming to the Powerhouse is a "danger room" area, where you can test out your build in a combat space.

This was covered in Roper's last "State of the Game" post on the Champions forums but, for some people here, they're much more interested in raging, sneering and whining than in following the facts.

After all, how can you sound superior if you let the facts contradict you? ;-)

The retcon costs are not going to change significantly anytime in the near future. Cryptic does not want players to be able to retcon at the drop of a hat. It just does not make sense to allow players to level one toon to cap and never roll an alt.

Of course most naysayers don't realize that, or if they do, agree with it. But please stop griping about it. It's the price to pay for having more character design flexibility than any other MMO.

Plus they have already given us one free retcon, and mentioned another one is coming with the economy update.

I need to be able to skip the tutorial when I create a new character. I've played the tutorial 3 times already during the closed beta, open beta and then in full production. I would play this game A LOT more if I didn't have to play that damn tutorial over and over and over.

Not even an hour out of your life...
You know with as much noise ppl make about this silly start up zone, they seem to forget that they still only have a choice of two other zones after that. They haven't changed either.

Planning and developing a character is the main point of any RPG. It shouldn't be a trivial task to create a powerful character and it should also be possible to fail at doing so especially for someone who doesn't bother to deliberate his decisions beforehand.

Free or even cheap retcons make the game pointless. It's like a strategy game with unlimited resources: It's fun for a short while but gets boring really fast

Of course you can't be an expert at any game from the start so you will make some mistakes. You have some limited options to correct them afterwards and you can of course start over new and try again if you are not satisfied with the outcome.

After all this said: players should never pay for mistakes made by the game developers so they should give away free retcons more willingly whenever they change something of importance.

I would wish they made stats powers and advantages three different trees to retcon, I really do not have a problem to be really expensive to retcon powers, but would prefer stats and advantages to be easier to retcon, especially stats, most woes come from selecting a wrong stat.

I wouldn't mind the retcon prices being so high IF i didn't have to go in order all the way down to the skill I'd like to remove. Only problem of course is that this would cause some problems with skill prereqs, could be over come by forcing people to take skills that would fill the requirements, then again, that sorta sounds like work.

If you want to do anything without join a party. Give this a miss.
Soloing an energy build is pretty much impossible.

Bill when will you let go of Diablo and embrace open world, instance-less technology?

Champions Online had amazing character customisation that would've made it a huge seller, but it's been ruined by the same thing that turned people off Conan and Hellgate London. Unless of course you are aiming for that very small niche market of around 100 people who love instances.

"It's important to note that although we're tuning the overall costing model of retcon during this phase, a substantial retcon will still have a high price. The heroic, thematic intention is not to just let players constantly change their fundamental character concept."

Yes, leave the ability to fundamentally change character concept to the devs on patch day.

This unyielding stance would be fine if game designers didn't constantly tweek powers/skillsets/spells/builds all the time, but as we know with MMOs and the ability to read a forum on the internet, designers consistently break their own games. Note that it wasn't until several days that a retcon came free to all players after the first snafu, where as WoW, a game that CO is CONSTANTLY compared to whenever some fanboy wants to justify MTs, always provides a free respec with any patch that includes sweeping changes to character builds.

Ultimately, you have eight character slots. The faster you fill those up, the faster you can start buying more slots from the store.
