Thanks for the write up. I never got to try any of the betas, but I'll definitely be following this game to see how it pans out.

Seriously? Do you need to have a guide for an MMO that compares it to WoW? Please, for the love of all things good in MMO's, stop using the "WoW Players Guide to XXXX". This alone is ruining your reputation as a "MMO Fansite", more like WoW Fansite that compares every other MMO to its Mothership, Blizzard.

Aw, relax dude..
WoW is a decent baseline - with 11M subs there's a fairly good chance that majority of MMO fans have actually played it - and it makes sense using it as a lowest common denominatior.

You have to ask yourself the question "would I like to see EVE Players guide to Fallen Earth published instead?"

Now would you, punk?

to look at the other side of that coin, articles like this encourage the large "i've only ever played wow" base to go out and give another game a try.

Wow wasn't my first or my last MMO but I recognize it's role as the current Big-Daddy. Chances are it has more ex-players than all of the other MMOs combined.

These kinds of articles are both understandable and interesting.

Using WoW as a baseline to describe the experience of another MMO is actually very logical if you think about it. I mean come on, which MMO fan hasn't laid their hands on WoW for a time being. I mean this helps us understand what the other MMO is all about and how the features play out along the side of WoWs.

Also, WoW is pretty vanilla bread-and-butter as far as MMOs go, even as the most popular one it's also the most 'safe' and standardized. Comparing things to WoW you might was well be saying "most other MMOs" since WoW really walks the middle of the lane.

I haven't played it, thanks. And I've been playing MMO's since UO.

As for these articles it sounds like the average world of warcraft player is just stupid and needs a guideline. Instead of a simple title like "Guide to Fallen Earth", World of Warcraft players apparently need their own guide otherwise they won't understand

Great, you make up a small percentage of people who read mass.com. Whoopie! An article about a new game without any comparisons would be a bit more retarded IMO.

WoWs a baseline for a lot of mmos/mmoreviews. Get over yourself.

you couldn't include the most important difference? Mobs can be shared WITHOUT grouping. If someone is in a fight with a boss and it looks like they aren't going to make it, help them. You know why? YOU GET CREDIT! That's right if you just land one hit on a mob you get a kill credit it's not only first to hit, or most damage. Just one hit gets you credit. So don't scream MINE! MINE! MINE! when someone hits your mob and when you see a boss being fought and you need it, join in... You might actually help someone out. Hey WoWers... everyone has to grow up sometime!

Levelling and skill mechanics seem to be lifted straight from Saga of Ryzom. Which is plain wonderful. This might actually be worth trying.

actually, it sounds a lot like EVE online, which is older than Ryzom, though there are some differences.
