The downside is that your game is a lot less scalable, and can't be transported. When the console's lifespan is over, you can only maintain the playerbase. It gets very hard to often find replacement consoles for new players, and most console games can't do a direct download of the entire current gen MMO. Try and go out to find a copy of Everquest online adventures or phantasy star universe and you will see what i mean.
