In a letter to all Star Wars Galaxies account holders today, Sony Online Entertainment has announced that they will be shutting down 12 servers on October 15th. This brings their number of active servers to 13 -- a pretty respectable number for any game to still host.
This shutdown has come as a response to the free character transfer service that SOE has offered Star Wars Galaxies players, leaving certain servers with drastically low populations while other servers have become the new homes of the community. Many members of the SWG community only look upon this move with happiness, as now it means having worlds teeming with players rather than wasteland planets.
The 12 servers being shut down are as follows: Corbantis, Infinity (Europe), Intrepid, Kauri, Kettemoor, Lowca, Naritus, Scylla, Tarquinas, Tempest, Valcyn, and Wanderhome. Character creation will be disabled on these servers as of today and all players still remaining on those servers will have the option of a one-time, one-way server transfer to one of the 13 remaining servers. For full instructions on this movement process, check out the Star Wars Galaxies main site.

Ahh nuts to that game. I was in the Beta program and even then I knew it was not the game TRUE StarWars fans wanted. I mean the entire professions thing to unlock becoming a Jedi...Ohh yeah I forgot about that in the movies how Luke would train in dancing and all that. Creature Handlers? The only pet in the Movies was the Rancor and he was not tamed!! THe game just was poorly thought out from beginning to end. And nothing SOE did after that would fix it.

So, when does SOE announce a free 3-month sub to TOR for all existing SWG users just prior to the impending shutdown?

Such a great game. Hard to tell if the company was two-way symmetric or two-way asymettric in it's relationship with the players.
On one hand, they seemed to ignore the player base completely...on the other, they let focus groups drive them to make becoming a jedi "easier" and other now infamous changes that led to the core fans leaving in mass.
Was a great game, and I'm always suprised that other games haven't copied some of the sucessful parts of the game...like player housing.

If you still have your disks, its exactly like pre-cu. They are almost completely done. You can join, make a new character and start the grind all over again xD

What moron would pay these people 15 bucks after all that they did in the first place boggles most peoples minds. SOE and Smedley needs to once again say "sorry" for this mess I think. They made a huge mistake and they still insist in making others pay for the service.
What I just can't understand is why do the people left pay them? Do they not see how bad they have been made into the goat? I have more self respect not to pay them. Prior to the NGE, CU barely.. the game was a vision that could have been great. The Dev team is also to blame somewhat because they knew how bad it was, hence Jeff Freeman before his untimely leaving of this earth.
The last few people should all log out, tell Sony to bite it and let them lose more money on this train wreck.
