Those headquarters in various cities are actually quite important and players will constantly find themselves coming back to them after completing missions. The level-less progression system is designed around your standing with the secret society of your choice, and their headquarters is were you'll receive better magic, equipment and more. Venders and what Ragnar referred to as "inventors" can be found here, too. Also, the headquarters operate as a social hub, particularly for Cabals -- TSW's version of guilds -- who call the city of their societies' headquarters home. So as you can see, your choice is very important.
Let's touch some more on progression. When you being in a secret society, you're nothing more than an initiate on the bottom of the totem pole, but as you kill monsters, finish missions, solve puzzles and explore, you'll earn access to more and more of what your particular society has to offer. However, Ragnar wanted to be clear that progression is neither linear or set in stone. He told us flat out that a player can reinvent their character every day, but of course wouldn't go into too many specifics. We did manage to find out that while there is equipment with stats tied to them, clothing itself will only affect the way your character looks. This essentially falls in line with Funcom's focus on people being able to play the way they want and look the way they want.
And if you think we meant Cabals get guild housing, then yes, you'd be right. Cabal housing will have a standing with their society just like the player, and as its standing improves more content will be unlocked.
So these two things -- player and cabal progression -- tie into what Funcom is planning for leaderboards. Anytime you or your guild do something of any significance in TSW, it goes into a leaderboard. The developer wants these leaderboards to have a very high profile so people will compete for the top spots, which is why they'll be located both inside and outside of the game. The current plan is to have leaderboards for each society, each server and globally as well. Of course, it wouldn't be complete without social media (IE Twitter, Facebook, etc) integration as well.
Various aspects of a leaderboard are ranked and holding a number one spot on many of them results in a title reward for the player or cabal. Additionally, players will be able to see the number one ranked society on their server, which should result in some good grudge matching in PvP.
Oh did we not talk about PvP? So, in TSW the Earth is hollow -- yes you heard us, hollow -- and that's where the 24-hour persistent PvP goes down between the three societies. Players will be fighting over a cells, which contain a resource known as Anima that can be used in tradeskills to create new items. However, the cells also grant PvE benefits in the outside world, making them that much more desirable.
At its core, TSW is a game that definitely seems to be striving to push it setting, story and overal mystery aspects. So when you travel to Egypt, everything you discover is related to Egyptian mythology and legends and the same goes for London, New York or any location within the game. Even in our presentation, Ragnar was gleefully teasing us about old enemies returning and tigers rising and just... well, we at least got him to admit that there's Norse mythology in the game. But who didn't see that one coming?
We're very excited to see more, and because of Ragnar and Martin's teasing we especially can't wait to get our hands on the game sometime in the (hopefully) near future.

This game looks like it could be very good if they put a lot of time, effort and money into it.

I've been looking forward to more information on this game, and I have to say I'm far more impressed with how it looks graphically than I ever thought I would be.
Graphics aren't all that vital to me, however, these screenshots look simply stunning.

The game looks really need, though I'm not sure I'm sold. There may be persistent leaderboards, but if we're not all running on the same server with a single pile of resources, you can never really be the best.
I'm really glad there's another RPG that's shunning the level system. Levels always felt very artificial and unrealistic to me.

Sounds like instead of 'levels' you will have to gain power by working your way up in your society.
"When you being in a secret society, you're nothing more than an initiate on the bottom of the totem pole, but as you kill monsters, finish missions, solve puzzles and explore, you'll earn access to more and more of what your particular society has to offer."
It could end up being not much different from a level based system depending on how they implement it.

This definitely has the potential to be really, really impressive. Screenshots look great, setting is different and fresh, progression path removed from levelling and classes, it all sounds great but will it be implemented to the high standard of the concept? I truly hope so.

Looks very neat, I hope they'll take their time and make it awesome.
Alot of people will have AoC fresh in their minds so the game needs to be good straight out the gate.

Wow... if Funcom has truly learned from their mistakes on AoC they have a very good chance with this game. I know it's super early in development but the basic game sounds neat... assuming they don't half @$$ it.

Like others, if they can ditch the craptacular AoC mess and have this game running great I am VERY excited about it.

I'm getting a nice Dark Age of Camelot RvR coupled with an open skill-based system. This could be either glorious or gloriously awful.
Can't wait to find out more!

So far, this game is sounding better and better to me.
There's something really cool and intriguing about the juxtaposition of modern-world items -- cars, gas pumps, swing-sets -- with horrific, creepy monsters and the like. I also like the idea of the three factions (instead of the usual two). TSW certainly sounds promising.

I agree, the setting sounds sweet. I hope they don't go overboard with the Asian influenced sword play though. Being a thug with a shotgun sound way cooler than being a skinny girl with a katana to me. Hopefully there will be some nice character choices.

Looks very promising. Can't wait to try this one out.
That being said, does anyone proofread these articles? I counted no fewer than 10 spelling/grammatical mistakes in this article, which lend no credibility to the blog's professionalism. But I digress; I'm just nitpicking.

I don't know why Funcom is hell bent on making pvp games, because correct me if you don't think so, but I don't think Funcom does PVP well.... >< Going to look gorgeous, but I can't say this article did anything for me personally.
Actually that's probably a good thing, less though choices in the future. :P

I'm not keen on the idea of leaderboards, it's hard to have them without people manipulating gameplay to get rankings. I'm also not keen on the cabals, they sound very bland in term of mythos from the brief descriptions given.
I'm thinking this game more than a lot of others is really going to rely on proper implementation. When you aim for something like this, the success is not so much the concept but how it plays out-how twitch based third person combat works and is balanced, for one. Looking forwards to seeing more from them.

Finally Funcom gets it use your own IP not pay for rights to use Conan/Lotr/warhammer like it limit your style and worst of all will cost you money to keep using them! Now Funcom is back on the right track with a brand new game and a brand new world with mythology and legends base on our every own! Lets hope they get it together soon!

I'm a monster DDO player, but I think this might be the only other MMO I can think of that will get some time and money from me in addition to DDO. I'm a huge fan of Mr. Tornquist and so far this game looks awesome.
I've been hearing about it for so long! Nice to finally see a screenshot or two. Now, when's it gonna get released!

I like the concept of this game. It offers a lot in terms of creative content. I would just hope that the game will release as a finished product and not the have to go through what AOC had to endure which. Ilove the combat in AoC!
For this game the ability to travel the planet appeals to my sense of exploration that I love in MMORPG's. I hope this does well.
