I really never saw the point in arena combat..
sure competition is great, but Raids, instances and arenas. Why not just play a game that only did that. Why wrap an mmo around it if all you do at "endgame" is to play with a very small group of people.

It takes away immersion and role-playing and undermines the idea of persistent worlds.

Besides these competitions are usually flawed. Class imbalances, cheating etc.

you make a good point, open world pvp is often much more enjoyable for me, played in a wow pvp server from launch through tbc and the steady decline of enjoyable open world pvp and the push towards arenas is what eventually burnt me out on it.

my favorite memories from wow were the battles that ensued after the release of the pvp system patch. the larger battles fought between tarren mill and southshore and smaller skirmishes in the plaguelands. was on a pvp server by the way.

But to kind of focus on the game at hand I'm going to try out open beta of aion and hopefully it doesn't leave a bad taste in my mouth. and to be honest I know very little about the game going in. does aion even have any type of open world pvp?

It is ok they have tested content to 50 on the North American servers.....oh no wait, they capped everything to level 30 in the testing phases.

I am not quite sure how the OP seems to be leaning against power imbalance issues, or suggesting people would be wrong to think this was the problem, when almost 50% of the top 10 AP gainers are 1 single class.

This idea that the amount of people playing the class is a factor is entirely wrong. We are not talking about a spread of AP gains across population, we are merely talking about the top 10.

It wouldn't matter if only 5 people on each server were playing other classes. It still wouldn't account for the fact that Assassins are 50% of the top 10 players.

This article is implying that 50% of the best players choose Assassin? Unlikely isn't it? It is far more likely that Assassin is an unbalanced class in PvP terms and in AP gains.

Oh what a surprise, an MMORPG with a massive imbalance in PvP.

This is why I always avoid MMORPGs that make a big deal of PvP over PvE content. It just doesn't work. It never does, there is always an imbalance.

How about some cheese with that whine? For crying out loud, you're wrong in so many ways. The No.1 reason Rangers have the most AP points is because they can sneak up on you unnoticed. It's a feature of the class. Don't like it, don't play. The 1.5 million Korean and Chinese players don't seem to mind, now do they?

Oh and just an FYI on that level cap whine - The reason it's not 'tested' during closed beta is because they're not testing the level 30-50 content or ANY content for that matter aside from English translations. The entire contents of the patches are already released to Korean servers weeks ago AFTER stringent testing.

Would you like some cheese with your whine about my whine? or did you not even notice the hypocrisy inherent in your post?

Such stringent testing that 50% of the top earners in PvP are all a single class? Well seems it needed more testing.

I don't give a rats arse WHY, the fact remains that it is clearly unbalanced. In a game that is about PvPvE having one class being superior to all other classes is madness.

Even in this article, and the one it links to, people are talking about the fact that Assassins are the most played class and that other classes don't have the same population....oh I wonder why?

This is why PvP in MMORPGs NEVER work, because you either end up being beated up consistently by something that is out of your control, eg Game Mechanics/Class Balance....or you end up picking a class that works in PvP, along with the rest of the games population

Piss Poor balance in a game that claims that it is PvPvE is a travesty.

As to not playing it, I won't be, for this exact reason. That won't stop me commenting on the game on Massively though.

I would like to point out to you and Brooke is the top 10 Player chart is from Korea's server.
As you can see, the levels on the chart are 50's and 40's, which is beyond beta levels.

Most of the population on the Korean servers are Assassins, this could be completely different for NA/EU populations or it may not.

There could be 100 Assassins and 15 Clerics, What do you think the chances are that better players would be showing up in a more populated class?

What you and those other people don't get is that those scores aren't PvP scores, they're Abyss Points. AP =/= PvP. Know how to get AP? Questing and Defeating other players in PvP. Know why Assassins have so much? Because they sneak up on unsuspecting players. It's part of the game. Nerfing a class because they catch you off guard makes absolutely no sense. I agree the numbers are high, but if you'd actually play the game or learned about it, you'd understand. Clerics are the best PvP class, btw. Your judgments are based on ignorance of these facts (and no, I'm not trying to insult you).

Oh and for the record to the splurge at the bottom of the article.

No NCSoft didn't "invite" us, they made us pre-order or pay for a subscription at File Planet to get an "invite" and now they playing 'hunt the beta key' or pay for the game.

Invites would have been nice, invites would have been grand.

No idea what you're talking about. There were key giveaways to non-paying File Planet members too. Heck, even I got one for my buddy who's on the fence about buying the game. And I don't have a sub at File Planet, FYI.

NCSoft may not have invited YOU but they did invite plenty of people.
Oh and PVP doesn't work in any MMO? Eve? Even WAR it works fine.
I'm sure there are plenty of others.

Plenty of people that pre-ordered yeah sure they all got invited for inflating Aion's figures and allowing the production team to pretend they had a hit on their hands....look at all the pre-orders we got!

As to WAR an Eve, I am surprised you didn't mention GuildWars too.

None of them are actually balanced, they just have such controlled PvP as to make the natural imbalance that occurs in every MMORPG irrelevent.

The moment you have a 1vs1 situation in any of those games, any pretence of balance flies out of the window.

I was actually going to try out this beautifully boring thing, but when I downloaded the "open" beta client I only found out I needed to fork over cash to get in. So.. .open? What? Where? I'm not seeing it. Shady tactics, they're keeping the game a secret to rip people off. Well it'll backfire on them when everybody just goes back to WoW when the next content patch or expansion hits.

Why does this have to be explained to everyone?
"closed beta versions are released to a select group of individuals for a user test, while open betas are to a larger community group, usually the general public."
See the USUALLY? It means not always....

Yeah if you pre-ordered the game SleepingPanda, then you could get a Beta key, there were probably competitions for Beta Keys too.

That doesn't change anything that I said or what other people, as evidenced by other posts on this very topic, experienced.

Skip the meal and the fast food place for lunch tomorrow and go buy a pre-order.

If you're not willing to throw down 5 dollars for a pre-order, we don't want you then.
The people who won the beta keys are lucky that they did, still people went out and pre-ordered to try it out and not be bitter that they didn't win.

We don't want you because if you are going to complain about 5 dollars, something that you go out and buy a pack of cigarettes or food for, then there is no limit to what you would get in there and complain about, come out and tell other people it sucked because you didn't think the wings were beautiful enough or weren't porportioned right for their body size and how theres no possible way anything could live with a shattered planet because string theory didn't support life that had no atmosphere?

Please, go somewhere else if you don't want to spend 5 dollars to help you not grow gray hair.

Ivasen, why should I or anyone else for that matter have to put down a single cent to become potential customers?

That is like putting a price on entry to McDonalds.

How stupid are you people that you would pay to beta test a product? That you would pay to become a potential customer of a company that made you PAY to test their product.

The sheer idiocy of it is incredible. Not only did Aion get testers for nothing, but you paid for the priviledge and bolstered their figures and you have the cheek to act as if other people are tight for not paying.

Just cause you and people like you lack a back bone and are so desparate for your next MMORPG that you were willing to pay for it, don't act like we are the ones being tight because we didn't want to pay money to beta test a product or that we don't have the right to turn around and berate such a company that demanded such payments.

The keys were given out to non-subscibers, how many times must I say this? Honestly, I'm beginning to think you're working for some other MMO company or something. Your points have all been refuted. -_-
