In First Impressions, Krystalle takes on a MMO and reports back at what you can expect from the game. Is it painful? Awesome? Find out as she takes an unscientific (and fairly opinionated) view of a game you may not have had a chance to play. Also remember, this is not a review; simply a First Impression - as such, we always recommend you give games that seem interesting a shot and decide for yourself.
Welcome back my friends, for some games that never end. With most of the craziness of the summer travel season and an injury behind me, it's time to dig in and get back to First Impressions. This time we're taking a look at the crunchy, post-apocalyptic indie title, Fallen Earth. Set to launch on the 15th, with a pre-launch start on the 9th, Fallen Earth is the first entry into the market for Fallen Earth, LLC, a spin-off of Icarus Studios. To say that it is an ambitious step into the field is an understatement of some pretty extreme proportions. It's not every day an MMO company decides to drop an MMO smack into the middle of a scale map of the Grand Canyon. More properly, a post Shiva-virus and nuclear post-apocalyptic Grand Canyon. Ambitious? Definitely. Whether or not it works, well... read on for my First Impressions, and make your own call once you have more of an idea what's in play here.

Well the bar has been put pretty low for a post-apocalyptic MMO. If the next one that comes out does not better FE I will be surprised.

Sorry folks. The MMO would be good but it still needs more time in the oven.
Throw it back in for another 4-5 months and it would be solid. A September launch is too early. On the other hand Aion appears to be about ready to come on out and play. Surprised they pushed that one back as much as they have.

@Venekor: I agree that you need to find a game visually pleasing. But "good graphics" is a matter of opinion. You state that the graphics are "nasty" and date back to 2002 (I think the gallery above shows that's really not the case), and that's an opinion to which you are entitled.
But indy games like FE need the support of gamers if we want to continue to see innovation in the market. We don't need more WoW clones *cough* Aion *cough*, even if they do look great.
The truth is somewhere in between. Sure, FE might benefit from a few more months polish - what game wouldn't benefit, no matter how good a launch it has? The graphics aren't nearly as bad as you describe them, but they're probably not that appealing to someone who puts graphics at the top of their list. For those who are looking for a new experience (myself included), and a new way to play, FE is probably right up their alley!

Hey you know what, I actually like FE graphics better than AION (and I will play both) ... of course, technically Aion is superior and has a much better engine, but in the end I just dislike Aion's art direction while I really like FE's. It's a matter of taste really :)

So for someone who yearns for a sci-fi MMO (post-apoc or not) and likes the character customizability and freedom of, say, EVE and Asheron's Call (yes, I said Asheron's Call), will Fallen Earth deliver?
I love exploring (meaning houses/buildings/things-meant-for-entry that you cannot enter pisses me off) and many of the newer MMOs give me *less* in this regard, despite showing off all this "new tech". Having a whole city around you when it's essentially just walls with a nice surface is an instant turn-off.
In EVE I train frigs exclusively because that's what I like to fly. In Asheron's Call I had a quick and nimble "dagger warrior" running around the world, seeing the sights. See any similarities? :)
Love(d) them both.
So can FE be a game for a quick and nimble explorer?
Is it solo-friendly when no-one else is about?

The people who are QQing over the graphics need to stop. They are really not that bad at all.

Having played in beta this summer, the stability and gameplay have come a long way (the graphics, maybe not so much =D) But I hear from alpha players, the graphics have made leaps and bounds. It's never gonna be an oh-so-pretty Aion. But the game play is there, they have a deep, robust crafting system and lots of MMO vets on the team. Several things aren't there yet, but they know what the need to do and I have confidence they'll get it done.

I would have to say the Gms are very receptive and I have noticed that bugs are routinely fixed almost on a daily basis. I have seen restarts (with no exp loss), the system getting taken down and updated of quick fix due to quests not updating or boss mob isses, or even clickable item issues. The only other issue I would say that I hope is addressed is the lack of rule enforcement.
There seems to be a LACK of name enforcement, chat channel enforcement, and just people being a complete idiot in channel, troll, tard, or what may you call it. I think besdies these issues the game community could make this a very enjoyable game. My solution was finding a good Clan to join and turn of new help channel which you may have to lower your intelligence just to listen to.
I have been playing this game sence beta and enjoy it do to its unique story line and wide open playing ability. There is not set 100% classes per say, but of course people will still try to make a perfect build a cookie cutter it from there.
