Another 'Open' beta that wasn't open.

I don't give my money to companies trying to con me into paying for subs I don't want or trying desperately to claw in whatever money they can by whatever means they can.

It makes me wonder how scared they are the game will fail if everyone gets to see it and whether they are trying to fill their coffers before people realise how bad the game is.

Hold a truly open beta to prove your game is worth playing. Or why should players invest $50 dollars in the box game? What evidence is there that your game is worth $50 dollars? The fact that you were too scared to let all the players in during Beta seems to point to the idea that the game isn't worth $50 dollars.

I got into the games beta for free on fileplanet (not a subscriber) :S.

Then again not getting into the beta is the least of your worries with this game. Incoming storm indeed.

Open refers to an NDA lift. Open betas are still -beta tests-. They are not free demos that you are entitled to. As a beta tester that takes beta testing seriously, this attitude many players have (that betas are just a free ride/demo) is truly annoying.

Additionally, anyone could get into FE's beta for free via Fileplanet.

Rubbish Mitch, for a start by the time a game goes to 'open' beta testing it has usually gone Gold, like Aion. Which means the game is already off to be printed onto DVD or CDs to be sold in the shops.

Beta testers at the Open beta stage are stress testers and are no more beta testers then people who buy the game. So any claim that it is more then a stress test and a sample for the public holds no water at all.

Where-ever the term 'open' came from it has historically been a way for a games company to show their game to the public.....any company too ashamed to do that must have something to hide.

We as a gaming community can only assume that there game is so poor that they dare not let everyone see it or else they would have appalling box sales.

What other choice can we possibly make from the information on hand?

Yeah I notice that now you can Mitch. Although Fileplanet is doing their best to portray it as requiring a subscription, for obvious reasons.

Still my comments stand, any company that doesn't hold a fully open beta test is hiding something. There is absolutely no reason not to hold a fully open beta test, it gives you an opportunity to really stress test the servers and gives players an opportunity to sample the game.

Any claim that such a period is actually Beta testing is just silly. I alpha test games I know what it is to test games, but the Open Beta test is not such a phase. It might be useful for data mining, but that is about all.
