Not trying to be overly harsh, but am I the only one that thinks Fallen Earth looks terrible graphically? Not to mention it's desolate, what is the fun in exploring that? Oh, brown stuff, oh look, more brown stuff, oh and some brown stuff over here!

To me, this looks like EQ1, the repetition in the water texture, the grass done as a single flat plane where it sticks up from the ground texture, the crazy boxy buildings with no protrusions. I understand buildings are inherently boxy, but these would be giant cubes if you removed the textures, no polys for windows or anything it looks like.

As a beta player of Fallen Earth, I highly disagree. The graphics are absolutely beautiful with crazy amounts of little details on everything and all characters. It has pretty high system requirements to actually see the nice graphics tho. It's quite different, it is a lot like playing an MMO version of Fallout 3. There are all sorts of different dungeons and looks to the game that you normally aren't seeing in these screenshots. I'm not even going to order it because I'm playing so many other games at this time, but it still is pretty cool and a much different and newer experience than playing yet another of the same old same old such as Aion. Hopefully it's around a while because I will get to playing it in the future. I admit most screenshots do not give the real feel of the game for some reason, and you have to actually play it a little while to see what it's really about. Too many people get lost in the skill based system and give up, I guess everybody is used to games holding your hand all the way through lately.

@ MewMew

Sorry, but I was in the beta as well, and I had all of the sliders maxed out and options tweaked in my GPU control panel, and this game still looks a generation behind.

Wait... you are complaining that a post apocalyptic game looks "desolate"? Perhaps rather than taking pot-shots at the game you should just say, "I don't think this game is for me." and leave it at that.

Complaining the game looks desolate is like complaining that WoW has orcs and humans.

I'm in the Fallen Earth beta and I think the graphics look great for an MMO.

I would suspect that the reason behind that that despite how awful Fallen Earth looks, its different from the traditonal fantasy based MMO. I still honestly believe the next MMO that comes close to WoW numbers will be somethiing that does something different and does it well. Jury is still out if Fallen Earth is gonna be that game.

The game is actually far from being bad. I am pretty confident that it will find its niche and there are few other games with such a setting. It is not the most technologically advanced, but it actually looks better in motion than on the screenshots and there is a surprising amount of detail to the "wasteland". Besides, there are plenty of MMOs that are popular and have way worse graphics.

Personally I am still on the fence myself. I would have likely bought it if not for the Champions Online and Aion being released the same month. Maybe I will get FE if the other two will disappoint me in the long run.

I wanted the game to be good as I like the genre. Alas, the negative comments about the game are entirely accurate. I have rarely played any games that are less fun.

I'm sure a chunk of the sales for Aion are going to Steam instead of D2D. I wish we could see some actual numbers for the two.

As for Fallen Earth, I tried to love it... but it just wasn't that fun. I'm likely just spoiled by the easier/flashier MMOs we have now.

Fallen Earth is certainly no WoW. It's also no Aion, EVE, Champions, DDO, LOTRO, etc...

While it may lack graphical prowess it is a different game. The really funny thing is all the comments you see on Massively from people demanding a game that does X, Y, Z and honestly, Fallen Earth pretty much does that but, because it isn't using the Unreal engine it gets a pass from the same people that holler about gameplay being more important than graphics.

Just in case you weren't sure he's a quick list of all the things I see people screaming for in Massively comments...

Skill based
Classless
non-instanced
not-fantasy
twitch combat that requires skill (that's a catch all for the various ways people try to say the same thing)
deep crafting system

FE has all of that. I think the only thing missing is

Guild Housing
Player Housing

Apparently, since it doesn't use the CryEngine it doesn't warrant a look. Meanwhile, the game that does use the CryEngine doesn't have any of the features people scream about on Massively all the damn time (I can say that cause I've been reading this site since it came online and those are the features most oft-requested).

*the author of this screed does not work for FE and honestly has no idea when he'd fit the game into his already saturated gaming schedule

There's a lot more to making a good game than having a good list of features. Take Darkfall. It has most of the things you listed minus "Not fantasy" but does have housing and it's terrible. There's something to be said about polish and just being fun. Features be damned, if your game isn't fun... it won't succeed.

Agreed, If it's not fun don't play. My argument isn't about fun or not. It's about features. Apparently people are marking off FE for not having the "graphics feature" while neglecting the laundry list of other features they usually go on about wanting.

Sometimes you can't have your cake and eat it.

@Chris

I've come to realise it's all about that dopamine hit with young gamers, so you'll never please them because they're more interested in dopmine (craving/hunting) than endorphins (satisfaction).

Better gaming through chemistry!

I can't wait to play this game, but I think it will be significantly better in about 6 months. Most games get LOT of balance and polish in that time. This is a game that I will definitely be spending a lot of time with, just not yet.

Flat, desolate wasteland in mostly tones of brown. Yes, it largely is. I'll remind you though that this is a post apocalyptic game set in what's left of the Grand Canyon area. What do you expect, flying crystals, lush green grass and orcs? It's not the prettiest game around, and it has a number of problems, but none of them that game breaking for me.

The sales numbers aren't all that accurate anyway. Aion isn't selling that well on D2D or Steam because you get special items by pre ordering directly from NCSoft. The same way, you get a special horse if you pre order Fallen Earth from D2D. So naturally, if everything else is the same, people are going to go where they get the best extra goodies.
