This last weekend was something of a letdown for Champions Online players waiting to get paid this week and purchase the limited time $200 or $60 special subscription deals, both of which came with goodies both in-game and out. What essentially transpired was that, well, Cryptic unexpectedly reached their limit for lifetime and six-month specials.
It wasn't the best of situations, and many community members are understandably upset by the sudden retraction of the offer. We asked Cryptic for their official response, which you can find after the break.
We'd like to take a moment and hopefully clear up any confusion regarding our discounted Champions Online lifetime and six-month subscription offers...
First, we do sincerely apologize for the rather abrupt end to the promotional offers. It was never our intention to spring that news on our fans or anyone else. In short, we had an allotment of special subscription packages to sell over a fixed time (ending September 1). When we began approaching the offer cap before the date cap, we had to message. Frankly, we never suspected our special offers to be so popular.
While we did mention that supplies were limited in an announcement post, we definitely should have emphasized our limits more explicitly in all our messaging. Again, we just never expected supply to be any kind of an issue. The community response to our offers has been... amazing.
It's hard for all of us here at Cryptic to see outcry in our communities. We work day and night to create the best gaming experiences we can and any missteps – big or small – on the long, winding, and sometimes treacherous path of development are always regrettable.
We do apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you and we do sincerely hope you understand and come play Champions Online with us this September.

It seems to me that somone in marketing at Cryptic made a bad call. I'm not aware of why there would be a limit on the discounted subs with the extras. I cannot identify any limiting factors. However, I do believe they should have upped the number of available special offers once they identified the open beta was a smash hit. I'm not sure what the cost is to them to allow for more people to purchase the offers, but one of their managers should have took a swag and purchased a few hundred more.

People just need to learn how to read.
This is what the official announcement said:
"We're very excited to announce two special subscription packages available for purchase for a limited-time!
Both of these offers are only going to be around until supplies last, so sign up while you still can.
Below are the details for both the lifetime and 6-month subscription packages."

There would appear to have been more than one email sent out. I received an email from Atari on August 22nd and it states:
"limited time offers"
"Act Fast ! Offers end September 1st"

People are going to be disappointed and I'm really not sure why they're buying lifetime subscriptions, product unseen.
The combat system isn't very good and a lot of the systems like crafting are very convoluted. CO has a vision and it isn't a very good one.

I must admit to being bemused by this, 22nd August I get an email from Atari detailing the offers, a couple of days later the offers are gone, nothing in the email from Atari suggested this was a limited number offer.
They did imply the offer was limited, indeed it clearly states:
"Act fast, offers end September 1st".
Which suggests the offer was time limited. Nothing at all about a number limit, really poor form from Atari.

Well, my issue here is that I was waiting through the open beta to make up my mind, once I did, I had to wait until payday (tomorrow), which is within the original scope of their offer, to make my purchase.
I was willing to throw down the $200 for life time and then eek out the costs to upgrade my machine, but I don't know how I feel about this now. I may not be permanently gone, but I'm certainly left feeling marginalized by Cryptic.
I understand that the lifetime subs are special, and the whole customer base can't be made up of them, but with a game that is going to be built on micro-transactions, I fail to see how keeping the option open until 9/1 would be that hard on the bottom line.

Official Forum post from Aug 4th. No indication of Limited Quantities. Either way Beau is apparently either a troll or Cryptic employee or both

Nah, Beau is just an optimist with a positive denial about underhanded tactics of some gaming companies' business practices.
The fact of the matter is Champions Online is not worth lifetime subscription because it is a console game better suited for gamers with a limited attention span. Creating a false demand for it by limiting subscription options or beta access options is done to hide that fact for long enough for most lifers to realize that at the moment.
I admit that is not a bad game, but PC MMO with a monthly sub it is not.

To the Guillotine with Jackalope! =)
I can for one say thisn't hard cheese, this is blatant backpedelling by a company realising they were going to go under in 6 months if we all bought lifetimes.
It is'nt enough to restart lifetimes thety have to honour the whole shebang. STO beta, costumes the lot.
They are, as fa as I can recall, effectively making hte same mistake as Hoover did with it's buy an appliance get a free holiday deal. It cost Millions and they were forced in court to honour it, even after claiming it was a mistake!
Cryptic are in the same boat and are now simply trying to limit the self inflicted damange by killing the deal early. I hope it's actually breaking the law here because I for one will chase it up just for their arrogance.
These companies are getting worse by the day, their practices are becoming more and more mackevellian at each turn.
As Blackadder would say, I have a cunning plan...Baldrick!

No it isn't breaking the law and I do not see arrogance when someone tries to protect his investment and the investment of the players.
anyway I can't really believe so many peopel just "waited" September 1st to buy a lifetime sub, sounds more people complaining for complaining sake.

So, since they put six month and lifetime subs back on, first I wonder how many from the complain swarm are really going to get them, how many of them are going to say a thank you and I don't have to wonder it only took a fraction of time for someone to complain about it.
what is wrong with people nowadays?
