I have never been able to play any F2P for very long at all. ROM was the only one that came close to being decent but a cash shop just ruins it for me. I would rather pay the 15 or so a month to have access to everything and be on even terms with everyone. It also kills crafting, for me at least.

People I have met admit to dropping entire paychecks on that game it's crazy.. how can you hope to compete if you don't want to drop that kind of cash. It seems unless your somone just messing around and not really getting invovled it's fine, but anyone that really want's to take the game seriously spends way more money then somone paying for a premium MMO sub.

When talking to people about the endgame almost all of those I spoke with say even though your supposed to be able to do/aquire everything in the game without paying it's pretty much impossible.

Anyway this is just me talking with people and reading the forums, not first hand experience so I admit I am ignorant. But I don't want to waste my time on it just in case. And it's more than that.. theres just something that feels wrong. I just can't play after a while, it feels pointless.

PS - This is getting far down the comment ladder so may be missed, but BigFish games recently opened their own "free to play" model game. They haven't been advertising anywhere I usually see MMOs advertised, so most people don't even know the game exists.

It's here:

Is anything really ever free? "free to play" always sounded like "GET A FREE TSHRT"......with purchase of new car. The cost of a box and a monthly sub is probably more then the, surprise you gotta pay to progress from here! hahaha, but at least it's honest.

I think there should be a third class called Faux Free to Play. I think games that offer XP boosters should fall into this category. An example would be Atlantica Online that has a Blessing License; the item's stats are:

Increase 150% attack power, increase 110% defense and will give 150% additional exp for 30 days.

The cost of this item is $14.99/month which is as much as a subscription for some P2P MMO's.

Yes, I can play the whole game free without this item, but it will take me much longer to level up and defeat enemies. I feel like I need this item to get the full 100% experience of the game. The item's stats are pretty high. I guess that is what the game publisher had in mind so that players will want to spend money in the item shop.

I know that game developers make games for profit; I just wish they would sell items in the cash shops that don't affect player stats. I guess different clothing, hair styles, mounts, and other item shop goodies that don't affect players stats don't make as much money as XP boosts.

I'm a big fan of the Guild Wars model. Pay a one time $50 for access to the game (and pay $50 for each expansion) and use the cash shop to buy vanity items, items that increase storage, etc. No items that affect player stats are available in the cash shop.

F2P on the rise? Could've fooled me. As far I've been able to tell it's only been used as a desperate, last resort for dying games.

That is extremely untrue. There are literally over a hundred free to play MMO's out there that started free to play from the beginning.

There are a few that were pay that went free in order to try to save themselves, but most (95%) free to play games started free to play.

Not to be offensive but it's amazing how little some people know about what MMO's exist and have been made for the past 10 years.

I really love f2p games...in a time when I really don't like extra monthly bills, its a lot of fun to simply spend the money on the game when I want or am able to do so. P2P games are fun too, but I have yet to find a p2p game that I want to keep the subscription up for, versus simply not playing anything.

My favorite f2p, Requiem, has both a "subscription" model for faster progression and other perks (region chat), and an item mall, but is also simply free otherwise. Sure, its more grindy when I don't pay money, but I'm still able to make enough progression that I have fun, and I enjoy the game itself.

Best f2ps:
1. Requiem
2. Runes of Magic
3. ACE online
4. DDO Unlimited
5. Lunia

I have yet to try Spellborn, downloading some manual patches now. :)

It seems like for a lot of people "faster" = "better."

"Yes, I can play the whole game free without this item, but it will take me much longer to level up and defeat enemies. I feel like I need this item to get the full 100% experience of the game."

Why? Why do you need to level fast to feel like you are experiencing the game? What's the hurry?

I don't mind F2P games, but that's because I'm not in any hurry to reach level cap. I actually have fun playing the actual game, not just getting to be the most uber-leet high level character. If all you want is to max out your character with gear, then yeah, you probably won't like a game that lets other people do that faster than you. But if you like the process of actually playing through the game, experiencing the quests, and exploring the areas, then there shouldn't be anything wrong with F2P.

Sure, Runes of Magic isn't as polished as WoW. But I find it just as fun to play and a lot cheaper. I spend less than $5/month on the game because I play it very casually and not that often and I don't purchase that much from the store. It makes it a perfect value for me. With WoW I spend the same amount if I play 60 hours a month or 15 hours a month, which bothers me when I have a busy period, because I have to decide whether to cancel my subscription temporarily or just eat the payment.

I also would like to see a pay-as-you-go type plan for paid games, where you put a certain number of hours of gameplay on your account and pay only for the time you play. I feel like I'm getting close to quitting WoW because of cutting back my own expenses and not being certain I play enough to make it worth it. If I had a pay-by-the-hour plan I wouldn't think of quitting.

I like to take my time playing a game and smelling the roses. I interact with all the NPC's and explore a whole area.

I don't like Faux Free 2 Play MMO's that offer XP boosts. XP boosts say to me: the publisher is severely limiting how fast I can level and my characters attack/defense stats, so I have to use the cash shop to level up at a decent rate. In other words, avoiding the cash shop means increasing a boring grind. The stats of Atlantica Online's XP/ATK/DEF boosting item is ridiculous.

As I said before, I realize that game publishers are about making money and not about offering a free game out of charity.

I am a believer in the Guild Wars business model.

I am also a believer in Anarchy Online's advertising model. I am surprised that more MMO developers don't make futuristic settings where they can place ads in the game as if the ads are apart of the world (like in Anarchy Online or the movie "Blade Runner".) They should embrace Google's/Funcom's business model and have advertisers pay and give players a truly free game with no cash shop.

Hey Krystalle, is that a Genesis "Wot Gorilla" reference you slipped in there, or am I reading too much in to it? :D

I have that album! :D That said, it wasn't an intentional reference, but it's entirely possible it was lurking around in the back of my head.

Now I have to go dig that out and give it a listen.

Overall, I'm not an enormous fan of 'microtransactions'. I understand the principle, but it seems like fleecing gamers repeatedly for small amounts of money for--let's face it--small items is highway robbery in some respects. It's not quite an MMO, but I'm seeing this alot in this year's 'Madden 10'. Sure, you can play throughout the retail copy of the game without ever making a microtransaction, but they're always there, lurking just below the surface, waiting to take out a few dollars for increased team leveling or an uber-hard difficulty level.

I don't think that subscriptions in PC MMOs will ever ever go away. Console gaming? Maybe. PC? Probably not. 'Freemium' and 'Free-to-Play' games will always exist as alternatives to the subscription juggernauts, but for my money, I'm gonna go with the well-established 500-pound gorilla in the room any day.

There are some quality F2P games out there one being my previous game of choice Silkroad Online prior to being overun by bots and Joymax having a complete lack of concern or an ability to offer support. I haven't played Atlantica Online in about 6 months but it too was in my opinion a quality game I never spent a dime in. I have tried many others and have been a beta tester for quite a few. A lot should go the way of the recycle bin but there are others that offer quite a decent amount of game play. What I usually find lacking in all of them is support.

My kids are enjoying FreeRealms and while they could care less about opening up extra jobs (they are 6 and 9y/o) I think a $5 fee is reasonable. I have foregone F2P at the moment and am enjoying the world of Azeroth every minute I log in.

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I'm a perfect candidate for F2P games of all kinds.

I'm an extremely poor gamer. I mean, poor enough that it's sheer luck I have a computer and a console at all. I almost never pay money for games, ever; when I do, it's usually no more than $10-20. I really can't afford even a $15-a-month subscription, like the ones WoW/EVE/LotRO/UO/EQ2/etc. charge. But, I do have broadband, spare disk space & blank DVD's to store installers, a little time on my hands, and a real desire to play games online against real people.

I own a Wii & a DS, and my wife owns a PS2; together we own a laptop. I find that the free to play model means that I can experience games I'd never have a chance to otherwise, like Runes of Magic and Anarchy Online.

I have been playing free MMOs for three or four years now, and I have honestly thoroughly enjoyed the experiences I've had. Games have in general gotten better over the years, which really surprises me; games like RoM, Shin Megami Tensei Online: Imagine, Requiem: Bloodymare and Combat Arms provide me with a LOT of fun, and the only price I pay for them is time.

Especially with the launch of D&DO: Eberron Unlimited as a F2P game, which I just got into, it seems like free-to-play is suddenly a genre worth taking a serious look at as a gamer, even if you have the resources & machine to look elsewhere. (And if you hate it, the only thing you've spent is time.)
