Interesting, I hadn't seen the interview yet (just the presentation and trailer). The quote that really sets it off is this:
"CCP: What can be done with the planets will be announced next year at the time our next expansion is due. This will introduce planetary control. If a player controls a certain amound of planets in one sun system, he will own the whole system. That expands our souverenity system and makes warfare within Eve more transparent and shifts it to a whole new level."

I guess we can only speculate - will land battles be possible in, for example, Goon space even if Goon controls the sovereignty in space? It almost seems like they're adding another level of sovereignty rather than modifying the existing levels.

I think everyone is missing huge chunks of how this will all work together.

Walking in Stations is (by my guess) going to be released concurrently with Dust514. Anyone notice how the working shots of it parallel closely to the graphics and style of the Dust514 video shown? WiS will be the meeting and brokering place for all these deals going down and most likely an outfitting hub for all the mercenaries. No gameplay interactions need to happen other than chat/interaction/trading which is probably infinitely less difficult to implement in an inter-platform system.

Also, consoles do the dieing, comps do the flying. If anything that's totally a compliment to the EVE players and an analogy that would seem to be fitting of the even more fickle console FPS crowd. It will not come out on PC, get over it and buy a 360 or PS3 if you care. If this game turns out good, you can bet EVE will become a juggernaut.

Yeah, the "pilots do the flying while infrantry do the dieing" is a nice catchphrase
but if system sov is flipped by controlling planet surfaces - what's the motivation to fly your ship to 0.0 again?

Why would you spend huge amount of resources and time building up your space empire when it can be flipped over by a mechanic that's not even in-game? There would be no point to 0.0 warfare anymore and it all comes pointless PvP, nothing lost nothing gained - might as well go grind WoW battlegrounds after that.

I'd wish CCP would release more information about the sov stuff, everything I've read so far makes me cringe.

I'm quite sure they wouldn't destroy EVE like that - but would be great if they could set the record straight.

Firstly, it doesn't sound like DUST players will be able to simply travel from system to system like locusts attacking one planet after another just because they feel like it. They're going to want stuff, and they're going to need to set realistic goals to get whatever it is they want.

DUST players will be invited and indeed paid to take a planet for a particular alliance/sov. They fight and try to flip that sov. Then they return to whatever it was they were doing before.

The payment is the real key. Without isk they don't get nifty stuff, without nifty stuff what's the point of playing for them? To get the most isk they'll want to side with a rich empire, and they'll want to build a reputation as being dependable and useful. Fickle nublets will not get paid in that environment and will quit, just like they do in eve. The hardcore decent gamers that have some willpower and intelligence will do well. I don't see that as scary at all. Rather exciting really.

I think you'll find that console gamer's aren't the endless mass of fickle nublets the pc crowd ticks them as. Look at halo's following. There are those who still play the original halo just because. Take that dedication and put it into an MMO atmosphere where they earn their keep and they wage war from a meta-game perspective and I think you'll find that they're much less fickle than you would imagine.

It's simply marketing fluff that makes them out to be fickle or irresponsible, and that's what most console games cater to because they think that's where the money is at. DUST might bring MMOs and FPS together in a way that actually works well, if it does then Eve will likely prosper from the results. It's a huge gamble but one that will pay off big for CCP I think.

I think the real test will be to ask console gamers. The people who have never heard of eve.

If they like it, I bet it'll work. I'm almost certain that there can be a synergy between console players and eve-online players that involves ideals more important than the almighty isk.

For instance, I can see DUST marines switching sides for anything from looking for more targets, to being interested in a certain type of planet/space. All in all it should be really interesting.

I think you're confusing vaporware with Soon(tm).

There IS a difference. WiS and World of Darkness are both ongoing projects. I bet they'll release DUST, give some time to balance, then implement WiS properly in a way that allows pc players to interact with DUST players. It would make sense to wait on a change like that for such a big move.

Calling any of CCPs projects vaporware is a little hasty. It takes time to make a good product. They've been working on DUST for three years, and World of Darkness was just trademarked a few weeks ago. If you look at the interviews World of Darkness is a a very very long way away. Ambulance though seems to have been put off for exactly the right moment.

I think at the earliest late next year or the latest late 2011 you'll be retracting the vaporware comments.

what could potentially kill DUST is if not enough players play the game and there ends up being a handful of groups being hired to fight for all of EVEs playerbase.

I personally think that this idea is genus and i hope it all works out in the end. Definately buying this (along with a console) on Day 1

WiS and World of Darkness isn't even Soon(tm), CCP has hardly said anything about WoD and kept a close lid on it. WiS has been something that they've always wanted to implement but haven't prioritized in favor of other things such as the graphics revamp, wormhole space and suchlike. I don't believe CCP has said that WiS is around the corner either, just that it's still in the making.

Agreed. I'd want to see it in beta before I signed up for it. I just don't see an FPS having the same depth as an MMO.

You people hoping for a PC version is not understanding the basic principles, if its on the PC people will stop playing Eve Online to play it, or visa versa. To have it on a console would increase the player base as well not moving players from playing Eve Online, but maybe convince some of the console players to purchase an eve online account.

Why? If I liked playing FPS on my console, I can play Halo, COD, Half-Life 2 TF, Resistance, or Killzone 2. I don't need pseudo-MMO trappings for that genre, especially if the point is to act as errand boys for a backstabbing pc playerbase. There's no shortage of present and future games done by actual veterans of the genre that I need to pay a monthly fee for this.
