I'm on Phoenix Throne, and the lower tiers can be pretty quiet.

Don't worry though, it's one of the most active servers for T4, and both sides have some large RVR alliances that can coordinate hundreds of players for some epic lag... er... battles ;)

Ok, I guess. T1-3 has never been an issue IMO. That's where the game shines. You can easily PuG and accomplish RvR and PvE with little issue.

T4 is just a different beast altogether. I'm excited to read next week after you've given 1.3.1 a little poking.

Hey Snafzg!

Glad to hear your first week back was enjoyable. I myself have been having a bit of fun on the Iron Rock server, rerolling a Choppa, who is now at rank 8.

It's great that there was oRvR action going on at the lower tiers for sure, as that has always been my main interest in the game. But could you perhaps go into more detail as to what's changed since you left? For example, I was pleasantly surprised to see that there are RvR tokens that drop that can be used for really awesome tier sets. I'm only rank 8 and have both Decimator pieces (purchased one with tokens and had the other drop last night). There now seems to be a lot more communications (the blue text) as to what RvR action is going on.

On the "PvE" side...maybe it's always been this way, but scavenging now gives me only talisman mats. I could have sworn that I used to get apothecary stuff as well before. Speaking of talismans, they appear to all be "permanent", no more temporary talismans!

Keep up the good work, I'll be sure to add you to my new friends list on Iron Rock!

I noticed that also, generikb. You definitely used to get Apothecary items - not any more it would seem. I guess Cultivating is the 'hardwired' pairing for it now.

There's more action than when I played at release. Still suffers from the same things I hate about it. Terrible travel options. Horrific grind. Glitchy combat. Bad balance. And despite all that it's the closest anyone's come to getting it right in the last few years. If Aion's the best this genre can do then mmogs are moribund.

Nice article I never got to rvr is it really worth it now? because of the population issue, my sub just ended and i don't plan on playing again. I started during closed beta and i really enjoyed it but because of WoW I really didn't want to play 2 games. After i got banned from WoW (lol) I started playing WAR again about 2 months ago and i loved it for the first couple weeks until i got burned out, I got to level 20 and i only got 2 scenario pops, there was no open-rvr so i stopped playing. I really like WAR but it felt like i was playing a single-player game. The population has really dropped since beta/release

Nice to know you enjoyed your first week with your Shaman.
I suggest you to continue playing it since it is now one of the best healers in-game and Iron Rock is probbably the best server in WAR currently. If you have the time ofcourse. After all, people want to hear about the improvements in Tier 4.

I am curious to know what you will think about the new Keeps and how you compare them to the old keeps.

I'm on Badlands and Gorfang...so far the population loads are spotty.

It depends on how fast you level and if you are in the current large wave of players. If they are below or above your tier, it can get lonely. But I always find the RvR scenarios and open battlefields crowded during the nights.

That said, I think the people who play healers in the game are fantastic. And the game doesn't gimp them in damage area either, so they can survive until help comes their way.

I am glad you are starting lower level, and that you are finding that server good for it. The last time I attempted to run a new character T1-T3, my experience was a little different. Yes, I was able to get RvR gear much, much easier than with my Launch characters. But, most of the PQs were undoable because of low or no population. And this was after the big PQ nerf-down.

WAR soooo depends on healthy populations at all levels to be fun. If even one point in the Tier path is devoid of players, it is like a big brick wall to players advancing and having fun.

After all the years of PvP vs. PvE (RvR) drama, I am now convinced that what is really needed is two seperate models for the way gear and stats behave, depending on if you are doing PvE or PvE. They just don't seem to mix very well , and attempting to use the same for both just is not working.

It's unfortunate that you randomly speculate about the demise of Phoenix Throne when, according to http://www.waralytics.com/warservers/index, it has the 3rd highest population (only 1000 behind #2) and has a nearly perfect 50/50 D/O ratio. Moreover, the population has been Med/Med everytime I've been on the past month and at this very moment Iron Rock is showing low/low while PT is Med/Med. Making such an unsubstantiated remark may deter new players from starting on Phoenix Throne and that would be most unfortunate as it is really a wonderful server on which to play.

Not sure how trusted that list can be - it has Karak Hirn way above Karak Norn when Hirn was merged into Norn 6 months ago.

It's pretty hard to put too much faith into these statistic sites when the numbers are coming from Mythic's Realm War site, which hasn't been known for it's speed, accuracy, or dependability. Another server status DB site is Warheap (http://www.warheap.com/servers/active/). When you compare numbers from both sites, they're close, but not in complete agreement with each other.

I hope that I properly counterbalanced my speculation on Phoenix Throne by mentioning two other major MMO events that were likely to affect the population. I did honestly see it low/low many times I wanted to log in. I also tried to relay the message that low server pops aren't necessarily a bad thing.

Aw, I looked for you a few times in T4 on PT this week in the hopes of saying hi.

Most of my PT destro guild (War Seekers) is waiting on Aion now, though a handful of us are still chugging along in WAR. Some of us rolled destro on Dark Crag this week just for funzies.

Glad to hear you're having fun on IR!

This series could not be more perfectly timed for me. I joined WAR just in the last few weeks since they have now made it Mac playable, and I went ahead and a got subscription after the free trial, for a taste of something different than WoW which is the only MMO I ever played ( can only play those you can play on a Mac) and I've played it for about 4 years now, which seems like an insanely long time to play a game ( though some of today's cataclysm announcements are exciting!)

I've been playing a Sorceress on Phoenix Throne and she's currently at about rank 12, but it does seem slow and empty.

I'm now off to roll a shaman ( i like healer/dps hybrids best) on Iron Throne and see if things are better on a higher population server. I look forward to reading more of this article.

One of the problems I've had with WAR so far is it's hard finding out info, since I'm spoiled with the overwhelming amount of info available for WoW.

Like for example, I can't even seem to find the WAR folder on my mac!?!!? I've done a spotlight search for Warhammer and only can find the start up of the game. Makes it so I can't download any addon's since I don't know where to put them. Perhaps this is a function of it still being in beta for Mac Users, but it still has to be on my computer somewhere, right?
