If the game didn't make it so boring to make ISK we wouldn't be buying it instead of playing the game.

Let's set aside any arguments about should or should not, just for a moment, and talk business. 6200 accounts at $15/month for 12 months equals approximately 1.1 million US dollars per year in business that CCP just gave up, just chased out the door. They also spent a pretty significant chunk of manpower costs, once they had some kind of an automated list of suspicious accounts, manually checking however many tens (hundreds?) of thousands of accounts to weed out the false positives, the false alarms, from the high-probability RMT accounts. All in all, we're looking at at least $1.2 million per year cost to reign in RMT, and if the process of identifying RMT accounts was particularly labor-intensive, maybe as much as $1.5 million per year.

One question absolutely worth asking, and I say this as someone who wishes all MMO companies would do what they just did and commit to doing so on a regular basis and who is, therefore, highly motivated to ask this question: what did they get back?

They get back whatever they're making by selling PLEX. They get back whatever they were losing to chargebacks on accounts that were paid for via stolen credit cards. Does that come to anything like $1.2 million, US, per year? My guess is no.

And *maybe* they keep from losing however many accounts they *might* have lost from people who were thinking of quitting because they were tired of competing with cheaters. Except this is EVE we're talking about here. ISK selling has been rampant in that game since day one, and they still managed to grow steadily. *Maybe* they would have grown even faster if they weren't famed as a cheater-haven, but there is exactly no evidence available to prove this.

So as incredibly delight as I am that they did this, I'll be significantly more delighted if there's a sequel to this story, some months or so down the road, where they are able to prove that this wasn't just the right thing to do, but that it also made good business sense.

A really rather impressive show dealing with RMT. I suspect it will creep back in, it always seems to seep in at the edges but the war doesn't have to be absolute. Keeping it to a manageable level such that folks aren't spammed with 'Buy ISK' messages when they visit market hubs is a benefit in and of itself.

The real point with PLEX, whether intentional or not, is that when it comes to a real economey - EVEs big selling point, gives CCP a great tool for helping to control the markets. Think like big banks who sell bonds to stabilize currencies that kind of thing, they have to 'cheat' to keep the money supply going, CCP have to do the same. Even if there wasn't a problem with gold framers, or CCP didn't make any money of the deal, it would be GOOD for the core of the game. CCP get a buy out on this one

Now setting up a shop selling ships or ore, now that would be a world different and probably suicidal for them. Now item shops, that's a whole different arguments. Show me them selling ships or blue prints and see a game hanging itself.

But for most games no, it's just blatant crap. Lets be honest: If you can't be bothered to grind you really shouldn't be playing these games, go play Xbox live. Lots of fun, lulz and all the maps you can buy, no grind, no consequnces. Otherwise what's the point for those of us that want a challenge?

People who love RMT on principle that it makes life easier for them: You guys do your thing - and I bet it's ultimately a totally pointless experience but if you want it you have it, but leave the rest of us out of it. You can't work, you don't deserve. Remeber that concept?

I really suspect that if we are left with two kinds of games, I bet you that ones without RMT are the ones you'll want to play in the end, seriously, but choice is always a good thing, the problem is in the short term the people who don't mind work are going to get screwed in this madness.

PLEX didn't seem that good, if they had that much RMT. My guess is that the RMT quickly figured out that they could easily undercut PLEX by offering the same or more ISK for a lower price. A smart person would probably buy ISK from the RMT, use it to buy legit PLEX, and give themselves a huge discount on monthly subscriber rates. Or they would just buy the ISK straight up from them as opposed to spending more on timecodes.

The grind-eh. Even you can't give any positive argument for it, except pretty much "you have to suffer to enjoy the good stuff." Players have been shortcutting it, and now even developers are, like Blizzard with Death Knights, and Perfect World with auto-levelling through meditation and other means.

As for pointless, come on. I've grinded out probably more than anyone here for gil in FFXI, it took months of real life time to earn the money to outfit jobs in that game. There is no fun aspect, and it is not any more meaningful to own an O Kote because you spend months of 8 hour days camping a single-spawn mob against 4 other people. If anything in MMOs are pointless, it's needing to farm trash mobs or play the auction house just to earn the resources to play the game adequately.

If MMOs didn't make it so god awful boring to try to make money legitimately there would be no RMT.

I find it discouraging that people seem to downvote "RMT=BADGAME" for saying so because Hes right and I know I'm not the only one who agrees.

I'm sorry, but most of you in here need to stop and think about what you're actually saying, cause it's a bunch of shit. RMT has nothing to do with the quality of the game, it's just another form of cheating, and there are some people who are willing to spend money to get ahead of everyone else when they don't deserve it. Want money? Do stuff to get it. Simpe as that. If you find the game boring then don't pay REAL MONEY TO GET STUFF IN IT. God people....this happens in every game anyway, and Gold Farming, so really...
