In just two days, Planet Calypso, formerly Project Entropia and Entropia Universe, will be shutting down for a major patch of epic proportions. The game will be undergoing a graphical refit, moving from their old graphics engine to the new CryEngine 2 -- the same engine that powers Crysis and upcoming virtual world Blue Mars. Old and busted, meet the new hotness.
The new version of the client, version 10, is now available for download before this whole conversion process takes place. The servers will be shut down on Sunday night/Monday morning at midnight UTC as version 10 is deployed to the servers. The servers will be unavailable for a few days, as the First Planet Company does a full diagnostic on the servers to make sure everything is good to go.
Version 10 brings more than just the CryEngine to the table as the entire game will be undergoing a full revamp. The first iteration of the patch will reintroduce the game's main systems, such as hunting, mining, crafting and the like, while also introducing brand new day and night cycles and improved avatar movement. Version 10.1 will introduce the concepts of MindForce teleportation (Calypso's version of magic), land area management, and apartments. Version 10.2 will include teaming, third person camera angles, and audio enhancements, and version 10.3 will introduce currently unannounced new systems to the game.
During this time of crazy revamps and changes to the game, the company will be closely working with all players of Planet Calypso to make sure things are going smoothly. Player feedback will be integral, according to the company, to ensure the smooth transition of Planet Calypso over to this very different new version.
Alongside all of these changes will come a special celebratory event, "The Second Golden Age of Calypso." During this event a new story will be introduced to the game while special, "drop once" items will slowly be added during the course of the event. Items such as this are big news in Planet Calypso, where all items carry a value in real world currency. The PED, the main currency of the game, is only created by players converting real world cash into the game's currency, much like the Linden Dollar of Second Life.
The rare items gained from this event will, with little doubt, appreciate in value rapidly after the event ends. PED, much like the Linden Dollar, can also be taken out of Planet Calypso and converted back into real world cash, which means this event is a possible money making opportunity for some lucky individuals as well as a fun celebration of the evolution of the game.
The game, like its predecessor, will remain without a subscription free, open to anyone who's willing to make a new account and download the game. A fair warning to all interested parties, however, as much of the game focuses on getting items. Acquiring these items, even for simple tasks, requires PED, and PED requires that the player invest some small amount of money to play. Items will still decay as they're used, forcing players to either pay to repair the item or lose it entirely when it breaks.
Planet Calypso's evolution certainly looks to be very exciting for those interested in this type of virtual world. Currently there is no set time for when the game will be coming back online, but First Planet Company has stated that this update will only take a few days. We'll keep our eye on the game, and will be sure to inform you when the servers will be coming back online!

Back in the old days, they named this game a virtual slot machine. I'd love it if they fixed that issue heh.

Let us just say, this is an illness that still remains with us today and runs deep to the system core.
However is being worked upon on multiple fronts.
Now that the CE2 Overhaul is out of the way, many of the system components are due to be overhauled over the next 12 to 24 months on planet Calypso, now headed by CEO Marco B. (First Planet Company AB).
As a participant who has been involved with Entropia Universe for just over 2 yrs now, I can say that Entropia does have a lot of positives. Yet it also comes with many negatives.
I remain positive that the new CEO will bring Calypso back on-track by returning to the roots which Entropia Universe was given birth - Pioneering the Real Cash "Economy" concept.
Your statement in calling Entropia Universe a slot machine/casino in its present day state is valid and holds much truth to it. However, as stated, this is being worked upon - This image has brought much damage to the reputation of Entropia Universe, those involved and their desires to stay involved and continues to. (Something I will not lie to you about)
The developers are starting to wake up to the such.
On the positive side, there is still a lot you can involve yourself in without getting to drawn up into the casino elements of Entropia Universe which can bring a lot of value to your experience in participating.
Like all things in life, the best advise is - Patience where money is involved.
If you are interested, you can read some more on the CEO's comments on the reinvention of Planet Calypso here:

So basically this is a futurized sci-fi variant of Second Life and not a real game?

It's always struck me as some sort of convoluted scam personally. At least in SL people create content, which others then buy. Here you have to put in real money in order to do the basic things you'd normally have no monetary value attached to. You have to pay real money in order to do anything necessary to gear up your character, much less kill anything, and the cost is not insubstantial. Pay real money to buy parts to build a gun which depreciates rapidly over time, whether used or not; pay real money to buy bullets for that gun which you have to constantly pay real money to reload, etc. When you add to that the fact that their ToS allows them to ban your account and liquidate your assets if you do anything like, say, complain about the game on another forum, I've always looked at this like some really extreme pyramid scheme than a real game.

Why Massively is even reporting on this real cash spam "games"..... This is not a mmo like we know it, this is not a real GAME like Second Life and unlike Second life this piece of crap does not allow you to do anything without spending real world cash.... Can we please get a ban on any of this mmos that not allow you to use any in game fake money and need real cash to do the basic stuff?!! I may have to set this site to R-rated on the P control settings. I do not want kids to play this junk like it got nice grapics....

Yes, it's a game.
No, it's not a scam.
MindArk are very open about the fact that this is more-or-less a glorified slot machine. However, "gambling" is a form of "gaming" and is frequently referred to as such. (example: Nevada Gaming Control Board). So by definition, this is a "game." I realize a lot of people are turned off by the expenses of doing anything in game, but it's no different than dropping a quarter in a slot machine. I for one, would rather fire a rifle or do some mining instead of pulling the arm anyday.

Second Life and Planet Calypso are totally different. Second Life focuses on socialising, where as Planet Calypso is much more of a traditional skilling and hunting / professions based MMO. The only thing the two have in common is a real cash economy. Planet Claypso is far more appealing to actual gamers, rather than Second Life, which is just full of perverts and child porn rings.

wow, i'm guessing you guys tried playing this and were upset that your money went away quickly?
joshua, mind ark does not ban people for complaining on community sites, the community have be complaining of community sites ever since the announcement, the repeated promised released dates broken, and the lack of new content, or the shrinking loot.
Jack, a child can not play this game, there is an age restriction to even make an account, and before you can even play after registering, you must wait to be approved, and if you don't get approved automatically you must send then a copy of your birth certificate to verify who you are.
mind ark claims entropia is not a game, but it is, and future things have been announced that people who do not want to deposit can do to earn money. and companies that are opening planets have also promised this.
you claim why bother, but massive has announced things about entropia before.
what I want to ask massive is why they are late on announcing this? i sent a tip in about this nearly 6 days ago.

Never got your tip in our inbox, our apologies. I wrote this story up as I just got the Calypso newsletter the other day. If I would have seen your tip, I would have jumped on it the same day.

its ok, colin.
email doesn't always work like it should, i have received messages 2 months after they were sent sometimes.
as long as the news gets out its fine, I really wasn't going to comment on the news until i saw the negative comments about the game come in. I duno if they are uninformed or one of the people who joined thinking they were going to hit it rich on the first day, but i felt I needed to put insight into the game up front.
it might even help people who read massively if you made a special article on entropia, or as its soon to be called planet calypso. It would probably make the game look less negative and less like a slot machine then people view it as.
however i know you guys also have news flowing in from probably over 100 mmorpgs to report about as well. so I view everything as all in good time.
but as a note, about the upgrade, ma is very wierd and random about events they do, but before the upgrade for about 2 weeks we have had small robots invasions at a couple cities in the game. there is a story line about a titan class ship (no size given but considering all things i'm willing to bet eve titan big O.O) is going to crash into the planet right before the servers go down for the upgrade.

besides bashing the game, wich I personally can relate to since i hate rtmt, I think the interesting point is that a game does a complete overhaul of its core graphical engine.
I cant remember many occasions where this happened in the past.
Sure some games like eve have improved their models and graphics or others like ddo have added some dx10 effects but to completely upgrade the game to a current gen engine seems rather unique and newsworthy.
imagine if wow went unreal3 or cryengine2...

Hi,
My name is David Simmonds from Mindark PE AB the company behind Entropia Universe.
Firstly I would like to say we are very happy to be able to offer our customers the chance to download from BitTorrent.
I will answer a few comments in this thread but if you would like to read more about Mindark and Entropia Universe please visit our web pages.
Entropia Universe is the first real cash economy with a fixed rate to the USD, its free to download with no subscriptions, you can deposit and withdraw real money. Mindark has be granted by the Swedish Financial inspectors a real would bank licence, this gives our customers confidence their deposited money is safe in a real bank with all the guarantees that come with it. Our security for the EU and our customers money is higher than most banks!
You can experience Entropia Universe for free, even earn real money! but just like real life you need to deposit if you want to skip the more mundane tasks and get to the fun straight away! co
If you expect to have an easy life in Entropia Universe your wrong, its tough!! most kids want to be "top guy" in a few minutes of playing a new game!, if thats you, keep away!. Just like real life you have to plan and take the right choices to succeed! shooting you guns in air like a wild west film might seem a fun thing to do but dont complain about loosing money .-). play smart!.
With the new graphic upgrades and major corporations building their own planets the Entropia Universe is the place to watch(and be)

I'm taking that post with a pinch of salt, partly because I'd hope someone in such a position would have slightly better English.

usually marco makes most statements from my experience.
this looks like a modified version of the welcome speech they do at events or in the welcome to eu messages.
I can't say if its really david or not.

They're a Swedish company. Marco usually does the PR but even he slips up with the English from time to time.
I'm inclined to believe it's actually David due to the whole ".-)" as that's usually in Mindark posts, but who knows.

Are there players who have made PED without depositing currency into the game world? What is the content like? Is this a form of RPG or a form of social gambling within a game environment?
