Oh, man. We can just hear the cries of Star Trek fans who know they won't get to pretend they're Worf gliding around the battlefield with this new Vigilant class vessel for Star Trek Online. You can bet that we're one of those fans, but who could blame us with this thing's sleek design? If you're a Deep Space Nine fan, then the acquisition of this bad boy is an unquestionable must.
Don't let the Vigilant's size belie its deadliness. This is a warship that packs a lot more heat than you'd imagine, which is kind of the point. It's also highly maneuverable because of its overall size and engine power, giving it the very tactical option of firing off a torpedo before turning its strongest shield towards an impending attack. With these traits, it makes a wonderful convoy, protecting all kinds of larger ships against everything from raiders to the Borg. Yep, we think this may be the ship for us, especially since we're all about frontline fights.

That's a cool looking ship, I just hope that they change their stance on certain ships becoming useless as you level up. I would be happy with a ship like the Vigilant as my main ship, but from what I read it sounds like everyone will eventually be forced into using 1 or 2 ships because they'll be that much better then the lower tier ships.
I would rather see the lower tier ships have the ability to be upgraded to higher tier at later "levels", this way everyone isn't running around in the same Enterprise class or a super Microtransaction class ship you can only get from their store.

That is an interesting concept. I guess its one of those things about striking a balance between gameplay and the mythology. If they are going to force you into 1 or 2 certain types let's hope there is a great deal of physical customization that would allow you to put your own stamp on the ship.

It will be curious to see how they handle cloaking technology. When the Defiant was destroyed in DS9 I believe they lost the Romulan cloak onboard. When the São Paulo became the Defiant I think they lost the cloak.
Would be great to see the Vigilant class take a more offensive approach with cloaking, but I think they'll keep Starfleet's policy against developing cloaks.
In general, the Vigilant class ship will be a beast if they stay canon.

I believe you are right about the Defiant's cloaking device being destroyed. They were only allowed to use the cloak in the Gamma Quadrant anyway.
Of course that doesn't mean in the 20 years since that Starfleet didn't eventually invent their own cloaking/phasing technology, especially with the Romulans falling apart and trouble with the Klingons starting.
It'll be interesting to see how they would balance the Klingon faction having cloaking, while the Starfleet faction would not.

/nerd knowledge on...the federation could always have developed cloaking technology. they just weren't allowed to after they signed a treaty that i'm too lazy to look up, but am sure someone can elaborate on...

I can't believe I'm nerding out like this but Starfleet wasn't technologically precluded from having cloaks they were obligated by treaty. I think that was established by the Khittomer Accords.
Going to sit in a corner now and weep softly for knowing all that.

Correct, the Starfleet policy against developing cloaks (discussed at length in ST:TNG during the episode where Riker and his former Captain go to find the ship which was supposedly destroyed but really fused into an asteroid or something) is because of a treaty.
Russell (comment 9) points out the final episode of TNG showing cloaking tech, so it's definitely possible. By then the Klingons are no longer allies, so perhaps the treaties are gone by then.

The future Enterprise had a cloak (All Good Things...which I think was supposed to be about 25 years after TNG.) And it had that enormous bolted on phaser thingie too. I'll have that one!

Right but that is not canon. Remember all three Ent D's got destroyed at the end of that episode. Something to do with Q being a douche, as usual.

Eeek. Attack of the Star Trek Nerds. (Points to self ...)
The ship looks great, btw. I am really looking forward to playing STO.
