I'd love to resub and join you, I have a 40/41 black orc on Phoenix Throne. WAR is the only MMO out right now that I'd be interested in playing, simply because I like the idea of a realm vs. realm campaign, and get bored very quickly with the PvE content in games like WoW and LOTRO.

I played from launch until around May, and I had to quit because of performance. I don't have the best rig, but the game played ok on it until about that time. I'm not sure of the cause exactly but my framerate became so bad that the game was unplayable. I'd be curious to know if anyone else had a similar experience.

In patch 1.3.1 people are reporting huge performance increases in the game client.

I can't wait to read these.

A Massively writer w/ actual objectivity. No agenda and blunt, honest, opinions. Thanks Brooke.

I quit just after LotD from Iron Rock Order. My opinion of the game then (early June) was just that not enough had been fixed fast enough, and regardless of the "shiny new" of LotD needing to wear off, it wasn't the savior of content I was hoping for. It thoroughly disappointed me.

I know I post on here with vile and anger about shit, but honestly, I'm just really bummed out that Mythic didn't make this game more stable & engaging.

Personally, I have zero interest in T1-T3. Those areas have been acknowledged as fun. T4 is where the game falters in so many ways, and was sold as something TOTALLY different then what's on live.

Also, Brooke, since you've been out of the game so long, I'd like to suggest you focus on the gear grind. Specifically - PvP gear vs. PvE gear: accessibility, availability and comparative effectiveness of the two types (PvE gear vs RvR gear)

Thanks JP. The "gear grind" is definitely something I'll be looking out for. I seem to remember players rewarding very few RvR tokens. The best way to get tokens was to actively participate in taking keeps, BOs, forts, and locking zones. As for PvE, it was a bit of a crapshoot due to the random drop mechanic. You could get lucky and earn your Greater Wards in three runs or unlucky (like me) and still be missing several pieces after twelve runs.

It will be interesting to see whether or not this has changed.

Hah, I think I remember your toon. The name rings a bell to be sure.

I made the mistake with Warhammer in leveling up 2 characters at once. One, my Black Orc (Kerchuunk), bashing the way through PvE and PvP content and the second, a Shaman (Kerrok) who levels only through PvP... well, 90% anyway.

The plan failed horribly. Due to my casual play (only a couple hours a night most days a week, which is still a crapload) I was only able to get Kerrok into the high 20s. Everyone around me leveled right past leaving my poor shaman in a near-deserted T3. And I feel guilty on my Black Orc at lvl 36 because he gets so far ahead too fast.

With other betas I am having fun in, I have neglected my shaman... still waiting to catch up to my black orc so that both might hit 40 around the same time. But with the RvR lakes emptier than ever in the T3 bracket, my shaman might have to level in PvE now... and Shaman are not the best solo class and finding groups in T3 is a pain to be sure.

It will be interesting to hear your T4 stories to see if they inspire me to finish these two toons or if Champions and maybe even Aion will pull me away from WAR forever... ever... ever.. ever...

I applaud the effort of going back to WAR, most of us wanted to see that one succeed but I think it's way to soon.

Mythic may have been able to fix the game breaking issues in a year if they had started when the first disgruntled adopters of the game began posting about the imbalances in classes (BW, WP), the excessive use of CC in Tiers 3 and 4 and the bizarre decision to make end game PvP centered on PvE instance grinding (for gear) and PvE PQs for city siege. Not to mention that 50+ players in a zone caused debilitating lag and the "solution" was to restrict the number of people who could compete in the fortress/city siege. This from a game billed on massive PvP battles.

No, I'm not a Mythic/WAR hater. I still want to see this game fixed. With the change of leadership both in the production house as well as the corporate division, WAR has a chance at reform but it will require accepting the poor game design, implementation and strong leadership. Unfortunately the recently introduced CC "fixes" seem too little, too late. And now there are rumors that they won't tone down the class imbalances for fear of losing more of the remaining population. Now that's complete speculation but it's the only plausible reason I've heard why BW and WP haven't been brought in line with the other classes.

Again, I hope your sojourn into WAR will highlight the positive changes made but more importantly, where work still needs to be done.

To adress your 1st point it has to be said that in 1.3.1 they have "redone" the city siege PQ. It now works as a mega scenario where the players have to complete two stages of killing each other or caping objectives similar to the Nordenwatch scenario. So the PQ is actually a RvR PQ now. The General and King encounters are now instanced for 24 man groups if people want to try them anyway but the defenders can steal chunks of time from the attackers siege by winning the PvP PQ so the attackers need to fight back all the time. Its working way better than before as reported by the players in PTS. They also did some improvements to performance and the animations that were actually noticeable.
As for the restriction of players in Fortress/keep fights, that is a bit innacurate: the restriction is only on Fortress fights. 1.3.1 doesn't adds any change to Fortresses (they stated that they are going to do something different there) but it included a second ramp on Keeps which will make the actual method of keep defense useless.

For your 2nd point, the CC "fixes": They stated that those are just the first step, and as acknowledged again by the player base they were positive, coupled with the strong nerf to AoE that you conveniently forgot to mention.
They also stated that they will tone down career imbalances. They want to do it cautiously though (which is a nice change from how they did things). They alredy nerfed AoE, toned down CC (which they said they will do more) and are fixing some bugs in career abilities (there shouldn't be any so long after the game release) to do balancing.
So the rumors that exist is you creating them and spreading, as you said in your next paragraph. After all, BWs and Sorcs felt the AoE nerf.

A piece of advice: read the Gaarawar interviews with the devs. They are really great and shows that the dev at least know what the community wants and they're now finally acting in a competent manner to adress those concerns (took them long enough lol).

OP, i hope you give WAR a fair shot. I am not expecting you to resub again honestly but the game has improved since you left. Maybe not as much in one specific area of your concern but a bit in a 3 or 4 areas that concerned a lot of people.
Since you mentioned you were going to try to level an alt a bit: could you try doing it in LotD? It has a great buff and it probably is a reason why Tier 3 is so empty: gives a ton of XP and you can go there from rank 25 so people power level their toons there.

Thhey still have characters that float in the air. They still have problems with ppl clicking on flags. It's so shameful how they have refused to fix certain bugs. Ah Well. I'll be looking to sink my teeth into Champion's in a few day anyway.

Performance in large scale RvR was dire, server crashes, fortresses got reduced to bath tub scraps while the few remaining castles turned into server-crashing ram-jam lagpiles.

If they've heavily improved that I'd look at re trying WAR, but the endgame was never that engaging, just mindless violence with little feeling of there being an actual point to it all, too casual, too arcadey, too much of a FPS than an RPG.

It was a lot of fun when it worked well though, but the stars aligning, blue moon regularity of that wasn't enough.

I look forward to reading about your re-entry, & I'll be paying close attention to how you feel the game has come along as I quit just after you did & I shared a similar view of the game to yourself for a long while.

Good luck in there.

I started back up in the Call to Arms program, and I loved it. Unfortunately, my friends would not keep playing, and rather than find new friends and guilds to run with, I went back to WoW (which was a huge mistake due to burnout). If Champions Online doesn't impress me like I think it will, WAR will likely get a subscription if I can find a decently populated, active server.

I really look forward to the rest of this series.

I recently did this myself.. I have never gotten to T4 though only played it on the test server which is usually not populated. So I don't have an overall view of the game. but here are my thoughts anyway..

Just play at a steady pace and you will be fine. Go mad and do massive sessions and things will annoy you.

It's not perfect and it never will be, since it involves the participation of humans for a lot of the end game. But with some more work, some of the rough edges can be polished off.
